Summary
Comparative study of conventional and digital intraoral radiography in
veterinary dentistry
Since the first filmless intraoral digital radiographs were taken in 1987, the system
inherent technique has been adapted to specific dental questions and improved its
outcome during this process. Therefore the purpose of this study was to compare the
digital Sidexis-system (Sirona, Germany) and conventional dental radiography in
veterinary dentistry.
It could be demonstrated that in all investigated dogs and cats intraoral digital
radiography was possible. In rabbits and guinea pigs the placement of the sensor
was difficult in some cases due to its thickness, consequently only radiographs of the
incisor region were possible. In exeptional cases an intraoral placement of the sensor
was impossible. The utilisation of the sensors for the presentation of other anatomic
locations in exotic animals was easily performed using a fixation aid consisting of
silicone.
Our study showed, that the quality of conventional radiographs was superior to the
original digital views in all species (dog p = 0,007; cat p = 0,04; rabbits and guinea
pigs p = 0,008). On the other hand, postprocessed digital radiographs were superior
to conventional radiographs (dogs and cats p = 0,002) or of the same value (rabbits
and guinea pigs p = 0,082). Therefore options on postprocessing possibilities should
be utilised to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the radiographs. In our investigation
