sue Gutenberg and Sons, but was criticized for being politically incorrect, and
changed it to Gutenberg & Family. He later turned it into a small magazine of
which there were two issues. L The newsletter kept evolving with each editor.
The most recent editor was Diego Vainesman, who I met in the late 1980s when
he wrote articles for TipoGrafica in Argentina. Diego is now TDC President. L
The TDC reference library has been growing since it started when we moved
to 42nd Street. Members who were retiring did not know what to do with their
books, and I suggested donating them to the club so we could have a library.
Linotype through the efforts of Steve Byers, donated the 1913 oak bookcases.
Every book, magazine and type catalog has been donated over all these years.
We have students and professionals continually doing research. L Our recent
venue has enabled TDC to have small exhibits. We started with one from Font
Bureau; a retrospect of Paula Scher‘s work from all the Typography annuals
she has appeared in; our very own, Celebrate 25, an exhibit of 25 designers who
appeared in the first 25 Typography annuals (as seen in Typography 25), and a
restrospect of Hermann Zapf‘s typefaces. L The recent years have been significant
for TDC. With a group of special members the organization has moved
into another realm. We have Salons and educational classes. We have a small
venue but a welcoming one and do as many events as possible. L Every year
seems to have a highlight. This year it was being invited to speak in Taiwan, at
the Asia University in Taichung. I opened the TDC55 exhibit, and spoke to an
audience of 300 which included students and faculty. L I would like to thank all
of the TDC members, many I know through annual conferences (HOW, TypeCon
and AtypI), mail, telephone, and e-mails. I appreciate their little notes to me
which always brighten my day. I always say »I travel at my desk«. L Lastly, I am
most fortunate to have my family. My husband, Allan, helps me put the exhibits
up and carry the many boxes of exhibition material; my wonderful children,
Adam and Samantha and their spouses, but most of all my four grandchildren
who remind me I am also, Grandma Carol. (My eldest grandson, Alexander,
likes to hear Grandma Carol on typeradio.org!) L Hopefully, I can continue
to be with TDC for many more years and we can celebrate more typographic
achievements together. L
