signal transit times in the cables (transmitting signals from depth up to
about 2 km to the surface) plus an off-set introduced by the use of a fixed
threshold to discriminate the signals. Two methods for time calibration
are used in AMANDA. In one case each individual PMT is illuminated
with signals from a YAG laser at the surface which are diffused in the
proximity of the sensors. The recorded signal delays are measured with
respect to the laser trigger time (T0s). An independent procedure makes
use of the down-going muons recorded by AMANDA. An iterative algorithm
is applied, which minimizes the difference between the times
recorded by the hit PMTs and the times expected for the best track hypothesis.
At each iteration an updated guess for the T0s of each PMT is
applied prior to track reconstruction. This talk will illustrate both methods
and discuss a comparison of the performance. The time calibration
method designed for IceCube will also be introduced.
Bioluminiszenz-Hintergrund beeinflusst.
The ”eyes” of the ANTARES neutrino detector, the optical modules
(OMs), contain photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which will measure the
Cerenkov light emitted by the products of neutrino-nucleon reactions. To
reduce background noise, the electronics of each OM accepts a parameter,
which defines the minimum charge the PMT has to collect within a
time interval of 25ns in order to trigger the readout procedure.
This noise filter could be circumvented by two or more photons reaching
the PMT within the 25ns integration window. These multi-photon
events can be caused either by random coincidences at high background
rates or by some correlation of background photons at a nanosecond
timescale.
Detailed investigations have been performed on this topic, using data
from detector prototypes as well as theoretical models. The results from
this investigations are presented and an assupmtion on the amount of
correlations of background photons is being made.
BMBF (05 CN2WE1/2).
The ANTARES project is constructing a high energy neutrino telescope
in the deep Mediterranean Sea. The telescope will use an array of
photomultiplier tubes to detect the Cherenkov light emitted by muons
resulting from the interaction of high energy neutrinos with matter.
Facing the high bioluminescence activity at the deployment site the
effects of realistic optical background on the muon detection and reconstruction
are studied and an adaptation is attempted. Furthermore, a
joint reconstruction procedure of both muons and their accompanying
shower is considered. This presentation outlines the main reconstruction
methods and results.
The ANTARES group is currently constructing an undersea neutrino
telescope in 2400 m depth off the French Mediterranean coast. The main
goal of the project is the detection of high energy neutrinos from cosmic
sources.
Although the detector is designed to reconstruct muon tracks, they
only make up a fraction of all neutrino events. It is therefore important
to be able to distinguish muon events from electromagnetic and hadronic
showers to allow a dedicated reconstruction of all event types in the presence
of variable optical background.
A method for determining the event type and tagging individual signals
is presented.
