Achema celebrates 25. anniversary
– From June 9. to 14.1997, Achema will be
taking place in Frankfurt for the 25th
time. Packaging technology for the
chemical-pharmaceutical industry has
become an established part of the
programme exhibited. The organisers
expect a quarter of a million visitors.
Previews start on page 34
Title story – In our title story we take
a look at the respected machine manufacturer
Uhlmann Pac-Systeme in Laupheim.
A striking feature of the company environment
is the large number of works
of art that can be found there, even
in the machine assembly building. This
is the atmosphere in which innovative
packaging lines are created for the
global pharmaceutical packaging market,
e.g. tablet blister lines or cartoning
equipment. Page 10
Impulses for the beverage market –
In spite of the euphoria for plastics,
glass will remain a significant packaging
material. This is indicated by the special
designs, shapes and colours found for
example in the mineral water market as
well as for beer and wine bottles.
Page 12
Advanced version of an established
concept – Roth-Container-Systeme takes
advantage of the in-depth knowhow
it has developed over a period of
many years to produce the Intermediate
Bulk Containers that are used for many
purposes in the chemical industry. Here
we present information about the latest
generation of IBCs. Page 14
The future of beer in PET bottles –
A forecast by the Sidel Group about
sales of their bottle blow moulding
machines and extruders for beer bottling
applications. It appears to be undeniable
that PET bottles are making inroads
here too. Page 16
Greater convenience with innovative
hinge closures – Lesieur and
Bericap, two of the most prominent
manufacturers of closure systems, have
had a reputation for innovative closures
for years now. With reference to examples
in France and America, this article
reports on some new developments
which demonstrate that there is still
plenty of room for further improvement.
Ipack-Ima 97 reviewed – 1996, the
year of growth for Italian machinery makers,
was followed by Ipack-Ima 97,
which attracted many visitors. Apart
from the many machines, which are a
tough competition for German packaging
machinery manufacturers, there
are other similarities between Germany
and Italy. The local market is stagnating,
growth is only achieved by exporting.
Page 20
Sweet, but difficult – Special machine
manufacturer H. Paal KG can
supply a wide range of different solutions
for packaging sugar. Paal is also
tackling the problem of packaging this
product in regions where air humidity
levels are high. Tailor-made equipment
makes sure that customers’ requirements
are satisfied. Page 26
Protop and Barex against glass
and PET – Velox has recently started to
market a synthetic resin material that is
already being used with great success
by two leading orange juice producers:
Joker and Pampryl. French bottlers of
fruit juices are switching to new barrier
plastics. Page 28
Fully automatic packaging of chocolate
bars – Case history of a machine
featuring new packaging technology. It
can pack five different thicknesses of
chocolate bars as well as three different
types of cartons, currently with a capacity
of 165 bars/min. By optimising all
systems, capacity can be expanded to
180 bars/min. Page 38
New beer filler – KHS, who have just
named Dipl.-Ing. Klaus Beisse as their
new CEO, have installed a bottle filling
line for single-use bottles with a capacity
of 64,000 bottles per hour with the
brewery Central de Cerevejas in Lisbon/
Portugal.
Bottles filled on this line will be
mainly destined for export. Page 40
Questions to the glass industry –
The second part of the interview between
VR writer Willy Tyroler and Klaus
Peter Rambow deals with innovative returnable
products, which have been developed
to help glass containers to
maintain their leading position in the
beverages bottling field. Page 42
An impressive success story – The
conveyor equipment specialist GEBO
Industries is considered one of the
shooting stars on the Paris Stock Exchange
because of the annual growth
rates of 25 to 30 per cent it has been
reporting.
Worldwide activities and export business
that accounts for 84 per cent of
sales suggest that a convincing market
performance can be expected in future
too. Page 44
Beverage packaging – Dr. Walter
Sprenger and Othmar von Diemar from
Schmalbach-Lubeca AG comment on
the use of cans for drinks and respond to
criticism by producers of returnable
containers. Page 46
Technical-scientific forum – Dr.-Ing.
Bernhard Klumpp, head of the Fraunhofer
Institute for production technology
and automation in Stuttgart, calls for
more flexibility of drive components in
packaging machines.
The combined use of servomotors
and microprocessors can substitute
mechanically coupled drive systems
with more flexible drive concepts offering
a higher capacity. In addition, the
forum presents new biopolymers out of
extruded grain and a calculation for the
exact positioning of shock-diminishing
packaging cushions. Page 62 ff
