Medical checklists<br />

After the success of the surgical <strong>safety</strong> checklist developed by the WHO Patient Safety<br />

Programme <strong>in</strong> 2009, which was shown to decrease morbidity and mortality by over one<br />

third, additional checklists are be<strong>in</strong>g developed.<br />

As part of WHO’s response to the <strong>in</strong>fluenza A H1N1 pandemic, the WHO Patient<br />

Safety Programme developed a checklist for HCWs treat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>patient</strong>s with H1N1. The<br />

programme has developed the Safe Childbirth Checklist <strong>in</strong> collaboration with three<br />

other WHO departments (Mak<strong>in</strong>g Pregnancy Safer, Reproductive Health Research,<br />

and Child and Adolescent Health). The Safe Childbirth Checklist Collaborative was<br />

launched <strong>in</strong> November 2012 as a platform for external partners jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g WHO <strong>in</strong> the<br />

production of additional evidence about effective checklist implementation. The WHO<br />

Patient Safety Programme is also develop<strong>in</strong>g a Trauma Care Checklist <strong>in</strong> collaboration<br />

with the Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability.<br />
