It is important to note that there were no <strong>in</strong>terventions promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>patient</strong> <strong>participation</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> the <strong>health</strong> <strong>care</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>gs at the time of the study. This expla<strong>in</strong>s the results and<br />

underl<strong>in</strong>es the need for immediate action <strong>in</strong> this area.<br />

Objectives for future work are to extend activities aim<strong>in</strong>g to implement a <strong>safety</strong> culture,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

» develop<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes and modules for <strong>patient</strong>s (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the role of<br />

hand hygiene for HAI reduction);<br />

» encourag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>care</strong>givers to use the model of “an explicit <strong>in</strong>vitation” to enhance their<br />

role; and<br />
