figure is higher than for any of the other communities studied<br />

<strong>and</strong> is doubtless reflective of access to education <strong>and</strong> of frequent<br />

travel. The proportion of men receiving some education is ten<br />

percent higher for Sherpur than for the other three communities.<br />

Also, they have, on the whole, completed more years of<br />

education, as indicated by the fact that the median point of<br />

education among Sherpur men falls in the 6-10 years category<br />

whereas it falls in the 1-5 years category in the other three<br />

communities. It should be noted that there are two primary<br />

schools <strong>and</strong> one high school in Sherpur, whereas there is one<br />

primary school but no high school in Singo Di Garhi <strong>and</strong> in<br />

Jammun. Balakot, on the other h<strong>and</strong>, has education through<br />

college level.<br />

Sherpur residents — both those in the <strong>Hindko</strong>-speaking<br />

households of this study <strong>and</strong> those in the Pashto-speaking<br />

households — also have opportunities to improve at least their<br />

passive ability in Urdu through access to radio <strong>and</strong> television.<br />

Fifteen percent of all the households of Sherpur report having a<br />

television set <strong>and</strong> fifty-six percent report having a radio. By<br />

contrast, only twenty-seven percent of the respondents in Singo<br />

Di Garhi report having radios <strong>and</strong> none has a television set, the<br />

latter situation due to the fact that Singo Di Garhi does not have<br />

access to electricity, whatever other factors may be involved.<br />

Travel may well be an additional contributor to the use of<br />

Urdu by residents of Sherpur. Large percentages of the<br />

respondents report having traveled to the following localities:<br />

Abbottabad (93%)<br />

Rawalpindi (90%)<br />

Peshawar, Lahore (77% each)<br />

Karachi (64%)<br />

Most of those who have traveled to Abbottabad report that<br />

they have visited there more than twenty times but have never<br />

stayed as long as one week. This is due largely to the fact that<br />

residents of Sherpur must pass through Abbottabad on their way<br />

to the Gr<strong>and</strong> Trunk Road en route to the other cities which they
