Conversely, Panjabi <strong>and</strong> <strong>Gujari</strong> are viewed as advantageous<br />

by many in Singo Di Garhi <strong>and</strong> Balakot but by fewer in Sherpur.<br />

For Balakot at least, this may reflect the frequent need for<br />

communication with Gujars. The percentage of positive replies<br />

was considerably lower for <strong>Gujari</strong> than for Panjabi, perhaps<br />

reflecting generally less positive attitudes toward Gujars than<br />

toward Panjabis. One of the advantages of speaking Panjabi was<br />

said to be its usefulness when traveling in the Panjab.<br />

5.2.2 Attitudes Toward the <strong>Hindko</strong> Language<br />

Three questions were asked to elicit attitudes toward<br />

<strong>Hindko</strong>, two of them regarding the language in written form <strong>and</strong><br />

one regarding the language in oral form.<br />

In the first question the respondent was asked, “Would you<br />

like books <strong>and</strong> newspapers in the <strong>Hindko</strong> language?” The<br />

responses from the four communities are summarized in figure<br />

(5.5).<br />

The highest percentage of positive responses came from the<br />

village of Singo Di Garhi (93 percent), followed by Balakot (81<br />

percent), Sherpur (63 percent) <strong>and</strong> Jammun (45 percent). The<br />

positive attitude of the people of Singo Di Garhi may be related
