The response of any individual to any one question is not<br />

significant. Certainly the questions may have different<br />

connotations to different respondents. The questions may appear<br />

to be overlapping to some respondents <strong>and</strong> not to others.<br />

However, the cumulative effect of the responses may well<br />

indicate attitudes.<br />

The responses to the Wad Pagga speech sample were<br />

generally positive (33+ <strong>and</strong> 10–) while the responses to the<br />

Talagang speech sample were more mixed, with negative<br />

responses outnumbering positive (16+ <strong>and</strong> 21–). From this pilot<br />

study we may draw the tentative conclusions that attitudes of<br />

<strong>Hindko</strong> speakers in Hazara Division are not negative toward the<br />

two southern dialects sampled <strong>and</strong> that attitudes toward the Wad<br />

Pagga dialect (rural Peshawar) are more favorable than those<br />

toward Talagang (Attock District).<br />

Respondents were also asked to state where the best <strong>Hindko</strong><br />

is spoken. Since all fourteen respondents are from Hazara<br />

Division, it is perhaps not surprising that five of them said
