to travel outside the area, as there seems to be little difference<br />

between the scores of those who have traveled <strong>and</strong> those who<br />

have not. Certain factors within each village appear to be at<br />

work:<br />

First, the women of Sherpur have regular contact with Urdu<br />

through radio <strong>and</strong> television. A household survey shows that<br />

thirty Sherpur households have television sets <strong>and</strong> 112 have<br />

radios. At times, members of households without television sets<br />

spend time in households that have them, so the impact of the<br />

thirty television sets in the community is not limited to just those<br />

thirty households. This contrasts with the absence of television<br />

<strong>and</strong> near absence of radios in Singo Di Garhi.<br />

There is another factor within Sherpur which seems to<br />

promote the learning of Urdu, a secondary effect of education.<br />

Mothers <strong>and</strong> other women hear the school-going children recite<br />

their lessons in Urdu day after day <strong>and</strong>, apparently as a result,<br />

learn some of the Urdu of those lessons. The widespread <strong>and</strong><br />

longst<strong>and</strong>ing availability of education in Sherpur apparently has<br />

had an impact beyond its school-going population.<br />

3.4.2 Pashto Sentence Repetition Test<br />

The extent to which the men of Sherpur are proficient in<br />

Pashto was tested by administering the Pashto Sentence<br />

Repetition Test to thirty-four men. The scores from that testing<br />

as distributed in the various age <strong>and</strong> education groups are<br />

displayed in figure (3.7).
