IAEA study requested by IGPRAD in 1987 summarized the relative risks to
a critical group that, owing to the large quantities of seafood consumed and
the higher concentration of contaminants assumed in such foodstuffs,
would be exposed to higher doses than any other group of individuals in the
population (IAEA 1993, p. 35). (See figure 9.1.) The study showed that the
presence of naturally occurring radionuclides could result in a risk greater
than that corresponding to the International Commission on Radiological
Protection’s dose limit for members of the public. Compared to that, the
study showed, the additional risks associated with the contamination of
seafood from radwaste disposal were about five orders of magnitude lower.
Moreover, it appeared that the presence of PCBs could represent a risk similar
to that arising from naturally occurring radionuclides. The study concluded
that the other chemicals represented risks that were lower, relative
