TRIPLE CROWN HISTORY
FRANK ROBINSON WINS AL TRIPLE CROWN IN 1966
Frank Robinson was a superstar outfielder with 10 seasons at the major
league level in the National League when he was traded from the Cincinnati
Reds to the Baltimore Orioles following the 1965 season. He had already won a
Rookie of the Year award and a Most Valuable Player award during his career,
but had never led the league in any of the Triple Crown categories prior to 1966.
Robinson changed all of that in 1966, batting .316 with 49 home runs and 122
RBI to lead the American League in his first season with the Orioles. He also led
the league with 122 runs scored, a .410 on-base percentage, .637 slugging
percentage and 367 total bases to earn American League Most Valuable Player
honors, receiving all 20 first place votes.
The 1966 season marked the only time Robinson led the league in any of the
Triple Crown categories, although he did finish second in batting average, third
in RBI and fourth in home runs in his second season with the Orioles in 1967.
CARL YASTRZEMSKI WINS AMERICAN LEAGUE TRIPLE CROWN IN 1967
Just one year after Frank Robinson won the American League Triple
Crown, Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Yastrzemski accomplished the feat
again in 1967. The lefthanded hitting slugger batted .326 with 44 home runs
and 121 RBI to top the league in all three categories and become the
second player in Red Sox history to win the Triple Crown.
In addition to leading the league in all three Triple Crown categories,
Yastrzemski led the league with 112 runs scored, 189 hits, a .418 on-base
percentage, .622 slugging percentage and 360 total bases. He was
rewarded with the American League Most Valuable Player for his efforts. He
would remain the last Triple Crown winner in the major leagues until Cabrera
snapped the drought in 2012.
Yastrzemski won the batting title again in 1968, but it marked the last time
he led the league in any of the Triple Crown categories.
