<strong>2013</strong> TIGERS<br />

• Suffered the loss in six straight decisions May 29-August 3 to establish a career-long losing streak.<br />

• Compiled a 2-3 record and 3.13 ERA (31.2IP/11ER) in five starts during May.<br />

• Optioned to Triple A Toledo by the Tigers on June 20 -- started four games with the Mud Hens before he was recalled<br />

by the Tigers for the remainder of the season on July 17.<br />

• Equaled a career high with eight strikeouts on July 29 at Tampa Bay.<br />

• Matched a career best with a five-game winning streak August 24-September 26 -- <strong>com</strong>piled a 2.98 ERA (42.1IP/14ER)<br />

over the course of the six-start stretch.<br />

• Finished 7-5 with a 4.30 ERA (92.0IP/44ER) in 15 starts at home...posted a 3-7 record and 5.73 ERA (70.2IP/45ER) in<br />

12 starts on the road.<br />

• Compiled a 4-7 record and 6.14 ERA (70.1IP/48ER) in 13 starts prior to the all-star break...went 6-5 with a 4.00 ERA<br />

(92.1IP/41ER) in 14 starts following the all-star break.<br />

Topped all American League rookies with 14 wins in his first season at the major league level with the Tigers in 2009.<br />

• His 14 wins mark the most in Tigers history by a pitcher age 20-or-younger -- surpassed Dave Rozema, who won 11<br />

games for the Tigers in 1977 before celebrating his 21st birthday on August 5.<br />

• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became just the fourth pitcher age 20-or-younger since 1970 with 14-or-more<br />

wins in a season -- he joined Cincinnati’s Don Gullett in 1971 (16 wins), Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven in 1971 (16 wins)<br />

and New York’s Dwight Gooden in both 1984 (17 wins) and 1985 (24 wins).<br />

• Selected to Baseball America’s All-Rookie Team following the season.<br />

• Tabbed the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association Tigers Rookie of the Year.<br />

• Made his major league debut on April 9 at Toronto, taking the loss after allowing four runs in five innings of work --<br />

opposed Ricky Romero in his debut and, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the first time since Major<br />

League Baseball’s Draft began in 1965 that two first-round selections making their major league debut squared off<br />

against each other...Porcello became the first Tigers starting pitcher to make his major league debut against another<br />

pitcher making his debut since Nate Cornejo did so at Texas on August 8, 2001 against Joaquin Benoit...at 20 years,<br />

three months and 13 days old, he became the youngest Tigers pitcher to start a game in his major league debut for the<br />

club since Bruce Robbins was 19 years old in his debut on July 28, 1979.<br />

• Earned his first major league win on April 19 at Seattle, limiting the Mariners to one run over seven innings of work --<br />

at 20 years, three months and 23 days old, he became the youngest Tigers pitcher to record a victory since Bruce<br />

Robbins earned the win on August 28, 1979 at 19 years, 11 months and 28 days old.<br />

• Became the youngest Tigers pitcher to start a game at Comerica Park at 20 years, four months and two days old, doing<br />

so on April 29 versus the New York Yankees -- became the third-youngest pitcher to start a game at Comerica Park,<br />

behind Seattle’s Felix Hernandez at 19 years, three months and 26 days old on August 4, 2005 and Los Angeles’<br />

Clayton Kershaw at 20 years, two months and 27 days old on June 15, 2008.<br />

• Posted a five-game winning streak May 5-27, the longest winning streak by a Tigers pitcher age 20-or-younger since<br />

at least 1954 -- marked the longest winning streak by a Tigers rookie pitcher since Armando Galarraga also won five<br />

straight decisions July 23-August 19, 2008...became the fourth pitcher age 20-or-younger since at least 1954 to record<br />

a streak of five-or-more victories in a single season, joining Fernando Valenzuela (eight, April 9-May 14, 1981), Dwight<br />

Gooden (seven on two occasions, August 11-September 12, 1984 and July 9-August 10, 1985) and Wally Bunker (six,<br />

May 5-June 1, 1964).<br />

• Won seven of his nine starts May 5-June 18 -- according to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became the first major league<br />

pitcher under 21 to win seven of nine starts since Dwight Gooden did so in 1985...prior to Porcello, the last American<br />

League pitcher to do so was Jim Palmer in 1966.<br />

• Compiled a 5-0 record and 1.50 ERA (30.0IP/5ER) over a five-start stretch May 5-27 -- according to the Elias Sports<br />

Bureau, he is the second-youngest pitcher in major league history to post a 5-0 record with an ERA of 1.50-or-lower<br />

over any five-start stretch...only Dwight Gooden, who went 5-0 with a 1.43 ERA over a five-start stretch at age 19 in<br />

1984, was younger than Porcello.<br />

• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became the sixth pitcher since 1900 to win four straight starts while allowing<br />

one-or-fewer runs in a single season prior to turning 21 years old as he did so over a four-start stretch May 5-22 --<br />

joined Christy Mathewson (six straight in 1901 at age 20), Chief Bender (four straight in 1903 at age 19), Walter<br />

Johnson (five straight in 1908 at age 20), Fernando Valenzuela (seven straight in 1981 at age 20) and Kerry Wood (four<br />

straight in 1998 at age 20) in ac<strong>com</strong>plishing the feat.<br />

• Selected the American League’s Rookie of the Month for May -- finished 5-0 with a 1.50 ERA (30.0IP/5ER) in five starts<br />

during the month...topped all league pitchers with a 1.50 ERA during May, while he tied for the lead with five wins...<br />

became second Tigers pitcher to ever win the award, joining Justin Verlander, who won the award in May of 2006.<br />

• Collected two hits and two RBI as he earned the win on June 12 at Pittsburgh -- according to the Elias Sports Bureau,<br />

he became the first Tigers pitcher to earn the win in a game in which he collected two hits and two RBI since Woodie<br />
