<strong>2013</strong> TIGERS<br />

his Tigers career -- joined Ty Cobb to be<strong>com</strong>e only the second player in Tigers history to lead the American League in<br />

all three categories.<br />

• Collected 100-or-more RBI in each of his last nine seasons (2004-12) -- is the only major league player with 100-ormore<br />

RBI in each of the past nine seasons.<br />

• Played for Venezuela during the World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009.<br />

• Selected to participate in the Futures Game held prior to Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game in 2001 and 2002.<br />

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS<br />

Led the American League with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RBI for the Tigers during the 2012 season<br />

to be<strong>com</strong>e the first player to win the Triple Crown since Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski did so in 1967...it marked the 14th time<br />

since 1900 a player captured the Triple Crown and Cabrera is the 12th player to ac<strong>com</strong>plish the feat during that time...he<br />

is the second Tigers player to do so, joining Ty Cobb (1909).<br />

• Selected the American League Most Valuable Player -- became the eighth player in Tigers history to earn the honor...<br />

joined Mickey Cochrane (1934), Hank Greenberg (1935, 1940), Charlie Gehringer (1937), Hal Newhouser (1944,<br />

1945), Denny McLain (1968), Willie Hernandez (1984) and Justin Verlander (2011) in ac<strong>com</strong>plishing the feat...Cabrera<br />

is the first native of Venezuela to be named the Most Valuable Player.<br />

• Topped the American League with 377 total bases, 84 extra-base hits and a .606 slugging percentage, while he<br />

finished second with 109 runs scored and 205 hits, fourth with a .393 on-base percentage and seventh with 40<br />

doubles.<br />

• Selected to the American League’s all-star squad for the third time during his Tigers career.<br />

• Earned his fourth Silver Slugger Award, his second as a third baseman.<br />

• Tabbed The Sporting News’ Player of the Year following the season -- became the fourth Tigers player to earn the<br />

honor, joining Hal Newhouser (1945), Denny McLain (1968) and Justin Verlander (2011) in doing so...named to The<br />

Sporting News’ American League all-star squad following the season.<br />

• Won the American League Hank Aaron Award recognizing the most outstanding offensive performer in each league.<br />

• Selected the Major League Baseball Player of the Year and the American League Outstanding Player as part of the<br />

Players Choice Award balloting.<br />

• Tabbed the Tiger of the Year by Detroit’s chapter of the BBWAA.<br />

• Won the Walter “Buck” Leonard Award and Josh Gibson Award from the Negro League Baseball Museum as the<br />

American League’s batting champion and home run leader, respectively.<br />

• Selected as the Luis Aparicio Award winner as Venezuela’s top major league player.<br />

• Captured the American League batting title by hitting .330, marking the second straight season he won the title --<br />

became the first Tigers player to lead the league in hitting in consecutive seasons since Ty Cobb did so in three straight<br />

seasons (1917-19).<br />

• Belted 44 home runs during the season, be<strong>com</strong>ing the first Tigers player to connect for 40-or-more home runs in a<br />

season since Cecil Fielder belted 44 home runs in 1991...it marks the 10th time in club history a Tigers player has hit<br />

40-or-more home runs in a season and Cabrera is the sixth player in franchise history to do so...additionally, he<br />

became the first player in Tigers history to belt 30-or-more home runs in five straight seasons.<br />

• Collected 139 RBI during the season, marking the fifth straight season he has posted 100-or-more RBI for the Tigers<br />

-- he became only the third player in Tigers history to collect 100-or-more RBI in at least five straight seasons...Harry<br />

Heilmann drove in 100-or-more runs in seven straight seasons (1923-29), while Charlie Gehringer did so in five straight<br />

seasons (1932-36).<br />

• Finished with 40 doubles and 44 home runs during the season, joining Hank Greenberg as the only two players in<br />

Tigers history to collect 40-or-more doubles and 40-or-more home runs during the same season...Greenberg<br />

ac<strong>com</strong>plished the feat for Detroit in both 1937 and 1940.<br />

• Collected 205 hits during the season, marking the first time he has finished with 200-or-more hits during a season --<br />

he became the 21st player in Tigers history to collect 200-or-more hits during a season.<br />

• Recorded 377 total bases during the season, marking the fifth straight season he has posted 300-or-more total bases<br />

for the Tigers -- he became the first player in club history to post 300-or-more total bases in five consecutive seasons.<br />

• Collected 40 doubles during the season, marking the third straight season he has posted 40-or-more doubles for the<br />

Tigers -- longest such streak by a Tigers player since Charlie Gehringer did so in three straight seasons (1932-34).<br />

• Tabbed the best hitter in the American League by Baseball America.<br />

• Belted a season-high two home runs on April 7 versus Boston -- matched the high with two home runs on June 2<br />

versus the New York Yankees, July 4 versus Minnesota, July 22 versus the Chicago White Sox and September 18<br />

versus Oakland.<br />

• Selected the American League Player of the Week for April 5-8 -- hit .455 (5x11) with three home runs and eight RBI<br />

in three games during the week.<br />
