AMERICAN LEAGUE 6, NATIONAL LEAGUE 4
The all-star game returned to Detroit on July 13,
1971 as the best players in baseball flocked to Tiger
Stadium for the 42nd Midsummer Classic. The
American League squad hit three home runs to take
the 6-4 victory and snap an eight-game losing
streak. Reggie Jackson provided the memorable
moment when he crushed a Dock Ellis delivery off
the light tower in right field for a two-run homer.
The National League hit three home runs as the two
teams matched an all-star record with a combined
six home runs, all by Hall-of-Fame players (Hank
Aaron, Johnny Bench, Roberto Clemente, Jackson,
Harmon Killibrew, Frank Robinson).
Frank Robinson was named as the game’s most
valuable player after finishing the game 1x2 with a
home run and two RBI. Robinson’s home run made
him the first player in all-star history to hit a home
run for both the American and National League.
The Tigers were represented by first baseman Norm
Cash, catcher Bill Freehan, outfielder Al Kaline and
lefthanded pitcher Mickey Lolich. Cash started at
first base and finished 0x2, while Freehan started
behind the plate and went hitless in three trips to the
plate. Kaline entered the game playing right field in
the sixth inning and finished the game 1x2 with a
run scored. Lolich worked the final two innings,
allowing one run on one hit, while striking out one.
The all-star game made its return to Detroit and first
visit to Comerica Park on July 12, 2005 for the 76th
Midsummer Classic. The American League jumped
out to an early 7-0 lead and held on for the 7-5
victory. The victory was the eighth consecutive for
the American League and raised their record to 3-1
in all-star games played in Detroit.
Miguel Tejada led the American League offensive
attack with a two-run homer and played solid
defense at shortstop to earn the game’s most
valuable player award. David Ortiz was the only
player in the game to collect multiple hits, finishing
2x3 with a pair of singles and an RBI.
Andruw Jones led the National League offense with
two runs scored, a home run and two RBI. Derrek
Lee, Moises Alou and Luis Gonzalez each chipped
in with doubles to round out the offensive attack for
the National League.
Mark Buehrle started for the American League and
worked two scoreless innings to earn the victory.
John Smoltz allowed a solo home run to Tejada to
take the loss. Mariano Rivera struck out Morgan
Ensberg to end the game and earn the save.
The Tigers were represented by catcher Ivan
Rodriguez, who was named to his 12th all-star
team. Rodriguez entered the game behind the plate
in the fifth inning and finished 0x1 with a walk in his
two trips to the plate.
