IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE
The first major league Detroit franchise, at the time known as the Wolverines, was a member of the National League from 1881 through 1888.
The 1887 Wolverines, led by Hall-of-Famer Dan Brouthers, won the franchise’s only National League pennant by three and one-half games over the
Philadelphia Phillies. They subsequently engaged the St. Louis Browns, champions of the American Association, in the longest World Series ever. Detroit
won 10 of the 15 series games, which were played in 10 different cities over a 16-day period.
Detroit dropped out of the major leagues after the 1888 season, returning as a charter member of the American League in 1901.
