6–12 The average age of trucks (classes 1-8) has historically been higher than the average age of automobiles. In 1995, however, this trend reversed, with average automobile age higher than average truck age for the first time. The recent boom in the sales of minivans, sport-utility vehicles, and pickups, which are classified as trucks, is influencing the average age of trucks. So many new light trucks are being added into the truck population, that the average age of trucks has been declining since 1993, while the average age of automobiles continues an upward trend. Using current registration data and a scrappage model by Greenspan and Cohen, [1996 paper: http://www.federalreserve.gov/pubs/feds/1996/199640/199640pap.pdf], ORNL calculated new automobile scrappage rates. The expected median lifetime for a 1990 model year automobile is 16.9 years. These data are fitted model values which assume constant economic conditions.
