Consumers continue to demand gas guzzling automobiles. The IRS collected nearly $71 million in 2000 from those
buying autos with fuel economy less than 22.5 miles per gallon. This tax does not apply to light trucks such as
pickups, minivans, sport utility vehicles, and vans.
