Archaeology A group of naturalists from<br />

Amravati districts has discovered a set of 17<br />

unique cave paintings in the nature-rich Satpura<br />

range of Madhya Pradesh – which opens up<br />

newavenues of research as this art form are<br />

believed to be of Paleolithic period. The first<br />

cave with a rock painting was spotted in January<br />

2007. “It is really unique and must be<br />

preserved,” says scientist Dr V T Ingole<br />

speaking over phone from Amravati.<br />

Archaeology The ongoing archaeological<br />

excavations in Pattanam region near Kochi in<br />

Kerala have now made another significant<br />

recovery; shreds of an amphorae (wine jar) of<br />

Spanish origin belonging to the period between<br />

1 st century BC and 2 nd century AD. Remnants of<br />

a Spanish jar used to contain fish sauce too have<br />

been recovered from here. Experts have said that<br />

such remnants from the Catalan region of Spain<br />

of the period were being recovered for the first<br />

time in India.<br />

Archaeology Archaeological Department has<br />

unearthed a Hindu deity's idol Kurukshetra,<br />

which statue is made of white sandstone and<br />

depicts Goddess Parvati and her two sons<br />

Ganesh and Karthikeya. "A few centuries ago, a<br />

pilgrimage might have been situated here on the<br />

banks of holy river Saraswati. We were<br />

excavating this ancient pilgrimage's pond and<br />

found this idol buried deep inside. This idol is<br />

made of sandstone and Uma Maheshwari's<br />

(Goddess Parvati) depiction is engraved on the<br />

statue along with her two sons, Ganesh and<br />

Karthikeya," said Rajendra Rana, Archaeological<br />

Department, Sri Krishna Museum. "This idol is<br />

1x1 big and is made of white sandstone. This<br />

could be almost 1000-year-old statue belonging<br />

to 10 th or the 11 th century," he added.<br />

Archaeology The radiocarbon dates of<br />

archaeological sites from New Phor, Movolomi<br />

and Khüsomi were recently received from the<br />

Beta Analytic in Miami, United States. The dates<br />

further ‘pushed back’ the antiquity of Naga<br />

ancestral sites as early as 50 BC, according to Dr.<br />

Anungla Aier and Dr. Tiatoshi Jamir of<br />

Anthropological Society of Nagaland. The Beta<br />

Analytic Inc., an internationally renowned<br />

institute of physical and chemical sciences has<br />

been providing efficient technical assistance to<br />

the research since the early part of this year, a<br />

note from the two researchers said.<br />

Archaeology A 7 th century Buddha statue has<br />

been discovered in Kargil — the tallest Buddha<br />

statue ever found in the state. The sculpture was<br />

discovered during a survey by the officials of the<br />

state Archives, Archaeology and Museums<br />

Department from Sankoo, a village on Kargil-<br />

Suru valley road. “This is a 7 th century<br />
