Against the Wind introduCtion to thE anabaptiStS During 1901 the Breslau bible study group was captivated by a young aristocrat from East Prussia. In an account of his youth, Eberhard refers to this man as “von Gürten.” 24 He was set on uncompromising and clear discipleship of Jesus, but forced himself and others into a straitjacket of rules and regulations. Though passionately enthusiastic in manner, von Gürten was also overbearing and domineering. He never had a good word for other Christians. At first the study group members admired him almost unreservedly with only a vague feeling that his attitude threatened to restrict their newly won faith and freedom. As time went on, however, they backed off from his influence. Yet in spite of the divisions he caused, he was an important inspiration to many. And it was von Gürten who first kindled Eberhard’s interest in early church history, which then led him to ask his father about the sixteenth-century Anabaptist movement. 25 Eberhard had finally found a topic his father could support, though it troubled Carl Franklin Arnold a little that his son was interesed in – of all things – what seemed to him an unsuccessful offshoot of the Reformation. Nonetheless, he put his research library of scholarly books at his son’s disposal and entertained long conversations about the Anabaptist movement, comparing its path to the course of Martin Luther’s church. Through his father, Eberhard became aware of a famous Austrian history professor, Johann Loserth, who had researched the history of Jakob Hutter’s Moravian Anabaptist movement. Eberhard had discovered the two volumes of Loserth’s Anabaptism in Tirol26 in his father’s library, and he later wrote of a discussion with his father about Loserth’s acknowledgment that the Moravian Anabaptists were “good, faithful people with a pure way of life and love of Jesus.” 27 The knowledge and impressions Eberhard gained through these conversations and readings continued to work in him, resurfacing with decisive effects at intervals of as long as six or seven years. 28 Three decades later he would cultivate a scholarly exchange with Professor Loserth. 29 But for the moment his discovery of Anabaptist history only served to awaken doubts about the Prussian state church – the same church that meant so infinitely much to his father. This illustrates the paradox in the relationship between son and father: they shared a burning interest in Christianity’s history, but at the same time grew noticeably further and further apart in their personal evaluation of it. 12
timE out Against the Wind One thing was clear: Eberhard’s missionary zeal, his ministry to the souls of his schoolmates and others his own age, his talent for seaking, and his involvement with the Salvation Army and the bible group – all these came at the cost of his schoolwork. Clara Arnold writes that her brother was indifferent about school, even that he had a “passive resistance” to it. By a simple calculation from esablished dates, it is evident that Eberhard had been lagging behind in his studies during the years following his sixteenth birthday. His parents ultimately convinced him to concentrate on his high school final examination, but he always maintained the worth of his missionary acivities: “I can never regret having worked for Jesus in caring for souls, and I must state clearly that it was his call and his spirit that urged me to do it.” 30 Since Breslau contained too many distracions from his studies, Eberhard’s parents sent him to a boarding school in the Silesian town of Jauer. 31 There he passed his final examination at the royal high school during the first weeks of 1905. 32 He was twenty-one years old. 13
