<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Privy Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>—to add George, Earl <strong>of</strong> Dunbarton, to<br />

<strong>the</strong> secret committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Privy Council <strong>of</strong> Scothmd, 8 May 1685.<br />

Superscribed by <strong>the</strong> King and countersigned by <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Morray.<br />

trusty and right welbeloved cousins and councellors, and right trusty<br />

and welbeloved councellors, wee greet you well. Whereas in consideration<br />

both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eminent loyalty and great parts and experience <strong>of</strong> our<br />

right trusty and right welbeloved cousin, George, Earle <strong>of</strong> Dunbarton,<br />

wee haue thought fit to adde him to <strong>the</strong> present number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lords <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> secrett committee <strong>of</strong> our Privy Councell <strong>of</strong> that our ancient kiogdome :<br />

It is now our will and pleasure, and wee doe hereby authorise and<br />

require you to admitt and receive him into that our secrett committee,<br />

and to haue full power and priviledge <strong>of</strong> consulting, debating and voting<br />

in all matters whatsoever that are to be transacted <strong>the</strong>rein, with <strong>the</strong><br />

same freedome that is enjoyed by any <strong>of</strong> your number : He being<br />

alwayes obliged to take <strong>the</strong> oath <strong>of</strong> secrecy, that is usually taken by your<br />

selves, at all times when our service shall require <strong>the</strong> same. Eor doing<br />

where<strong>of</strong> this shalbe to you and him respectively, a sufficient warrant.<br />

And so wee bid you heartily farewell. Given at our Court at Whitehall,<br />

<strong>the</strong> 8th day <strong>of</strong> May 1685, and <strong>of</strong> our reign.e <strong>the</strong>- 1st year.<br />

commissioner, dated 8 May 1685. Superscribed by <strong>the</strong> King and<br />

countersigned by <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Morray. <strong>The</strong> full address <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter is<br />

in <strong>the</strong> same terms as !No. 22 (1) above.<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> address <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>of</strong> Queensberry adds in his own hand <strong>the</strong><br />

following docquet: "By this his Majestic geivs his royall plesour about<br />

Earle Dunbartane his veuing his forses, muggazins &c."<br />

require our right trusty and right welbeloved cousin, George, Earle <strong>of</strong><br />

Dunbartan, with all convenient diligence after his arrivall in that our<br />

ancient kingdome, to view and inspect all oiu' standing forces <strong>the</strong>re,<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r horse, foot, dragoones or artillery, and our garrisons in our<br />

castles and forts, toge<strong>the</strong>r with our stores and magazins and all things<br />

<strong>the</strong>reunto belonging, in manner and for <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>the</strong>rein at greater<br />

length expressed; wee haue now thought fit to give you notice <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong><br />

and withail to authorise and require you to give all orders and directions<br />
