110. <strong>The</strong> change in <strong>the</strong> Prince's condition had made no alteration in<br />

his kindness for him. (King Charles died on 6th February 1685.)<br />

Whitehall, February 16 : 1685.<br />

I haue receved yours <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 10 : by <strong>the</strong> flying pacquet, and haue now<br />

only tyme to tell you that <strong>the</strong> change <strong>of</strong> my condition has made no<br />

alteration in kindnesse to you, having <strong>the</strong> same esteeme and concideration<br />

for you I had before ; which I am sure you will give me no reason<br />

to alter ; so that you may be at quiat in your mind, and shall find I<br />

have <strong>the</strong> same trust and confidence in you I had, and am sencible none<br />

has serued me better and more faithfully <strong>the</strong>n you, and do rely on <strong>the</strong><br />

continuance <strong>of</strong> it. As to o<strong>the</strong>r things, you will know my pleasur from<br />

<strong>the</strong> letters I haue signed, and what <strong>the</strong> Secretarys will say to you.<br />

111. Recommending <strong>the</strong> Bearer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Letter.<br />

Whitehall, July 1 : 1685.<br />

I would not lett this bearer returne back" to you without a letter from<br />

me, tho' he going back by sea, is not like to be so sone with you as <strong>the</strong><br />

post which gos tomorrow ; so that all I shall say to you by him is that<br />

I am well satisfyd with him, and look on him like an honest man ; and<br />

shall be glad that some thing may be found to shew him a kindnesse.<br />

112. Recommending Robert Barkley, a Quaker, as well affected to<br />

<strong>the</strong> King.<br />

Tho' I haue not great reson to be well satisfyd with <strong>the</strong> Quakers in<br />

generall, yet I look on this bearer, Robert Barkley, to be well aflected<br />

to me ; so that T would have you shew him what countenance is reasonable,<br />

and not lett him suffer for <strong>the</strong> faults <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> his perswatioD,<br />

which is all I shall s-ay now.<br />

Since I write to you from Edinburgh, I received yours <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 26 <strong>of</strong><br />

August. As to publict matters I shall leave debating about <strong>the</strong>m till<br />

wee meet. But for <strong>the</strong> ill u»adge you say you have mett with, in particulares<br />

both <strong>of</strong> my ouen concern and mj nevoy, Annandales, I know
