83. From <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> fiyeinge paket uas dispatched yisterday<br />

till eight a'cloke this morninge I never left <strong>the</strong> Kinge, and<br />

shall giue your <strong>Grace</strong> a short account bo<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> applications<br />

and his condition all that time. Yisterday about tuelf a'cloke<br />

he begun to recover his speetch a litill and from that time continowed<br />

still on <strong>the</strong> mendinge hand tho' sloely : every four hours<br />

he had a purge giuen him <strong>of</strong> Hyerapikra uhich had all <strong>the</strong> good<br />

effects uished for, he vometed four or fife tyms, but about on<br />

a'cloke this morninge he had 3 or 4 large stools that so mutch<br />

relived his head and refreshed his spirits that from that time<br />

he spoke ueall and as sensible as ever. <strong>The</strong>n uas blisteringe<br />

plasters put to eatch <strong>of</strong> his legs and thyes, to every arme, his<br />

showlders and head ; about fife this morninge <strong>the</strong>y near taken<br />

<strong>of</strong>f and had done <strong>the</strong>r opperatione extremly ueall, but put his<br />

Majesty to a great deall <strong>of</strong> pain in taking <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> skine, uhich<br />

reioiced us all extremly that he found <strong>the</strong> pain so sensibly ; he<br />

slept aboue tuo hours togi<strong>the</strong>r befor that verry soundly and<br />

quietly, and about sevin this morning he begune to talk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

way he took his diseass verry cherfully, to <strong>the</strong> unspekable joy <strong>of</strong><br />

all present. <strong>The</strong> Docters <strong>the</strong>n declaered he uas past all hazard<br />

and this morninge about ten a'cloke thy driw some blood <strong>of</strong><br />

him at <strong>the</strong> jugular vaens. Blessed be God he recovers hourly,<br />

and is in a verry good condition. God Almighty mak all his<br />

good subjects thankfull for so great a delyverans. I confes I<br />

am not able to uryt more, beinge ill my self and overuaeked<br />

uhich I littill minded in <strong>the</strong> time. This will certinly<br />

alter missurs, but I can say nothinge yit <strong>of</strong> it. You<br />

may haue your owne thoughts and communicat what you<br />

think fitt.<br />

Postscript :—Since uryting this letter <strong>the</strong> King hes bine agaen<br />

blede in <strong>the</strong> jugular vaens and ui<strong>the</strong> as good effects as could be<br />

uished, and besyds, <strong>the</strong> blisters in his head and nek haue rune<br />

througe his night cape and his verry pillow, so that <strong>the</strong> Phisitians<br />

declaer'd to us this night in Councill that his Majesty uas past all<br />

daenger. <strong>The</strong>r uill be a day <strong>of</strong> publicte thanks giuinge for <strong>the</strong><br />

King's recovery hear, but <strong>the</strong> day is not yit resolved upon ; so<br />

sone as it is your <strong>Grace</strong> shall be acquented that <strong>the</strong> lyk may be in<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> ; wee haue not only vesone to giue God thanks upon<br />

this day but all <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong> our lives. I uas ui<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kinge<br />

after Councill and saw him verry mutch beter <strong>the</strong>n he uas in<br />

<strong>the</strong> morninge and heard him speake cherfully.
