"William Dowglas in Know, John Dowglas called <strong>of</strong> Stable (vocat. a<br />

stabulo), and John Reid, rancour <strong>of</strong> mind, royal suit and action, for art<br />

and part in <strong>the</strong> slaughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Hugh Dowglas <strong>of</strong> Dalvene, committed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> August last, provided <strong>the</strong>y satisfied persons<br />

complaining, &c. to endure for <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> parties. Great Seal<br />

43. Dispensation by John, Archbishop <strong>of</strong> S* Andrews, primate <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> whole kingdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, legatus natus, abbot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monastery<br />

<strong>of</strong> Paisley <strong>of</strong> Glasgow diocese, and legate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy Apostolic see,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> a legate a latere, directed to Roger Greirsone <strong>of</strong> Lag,<br />

layman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said diocese, and .Helen Douglas, daughter <strong>of</strong> James<br />

Douglas <strong>of</strong> Drumlanrig, knight, a woman <strong>of</strong> Glasgow diocese, stating<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir petition to be joined in wedlock, but because <strong>the</strong>y were in <strong>the</strong> third<br />

and fourth, and fourth and fourth grades <strong>of</strong> consanguinity <strong>the</strong>y could<br />

not accomplish <strong>the</strong>ir desire, and had humbly supplicated <strong>the</strong> archbishop<br />

for a remedy, who accordingly allows <strong>the</strong>m to contract marriage in face<br />

<strong>of</strong> church, &c. Given under <strong>the</strong> archbishop's seal at <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong><br />

Edinburgh, 3° Kal. Martii (28 February) 1566. Signed by A, Forrest,<br />

An indorsation bears that on 21 April 1566 before a notary and<br />

witnesses Roger Greirsone <strong>of</strong> Lag, and Helen Dowglas, before solemnization<br />

<strong>of</strong> marriage and at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir marriage, delivered to <strong>the</strong><br />

notary <strong>the</strong> letters <strong>of</strong> dispensation to be read, which he did, and <strong>the</strong><br />

parties protested that <strong>the</strong>re was no impediment to <strong>the</strong>ir marriage, &c.<br />

Done in <strong>the</strong> chamber <strong>of</strong> James Dowglas <strong>of</strong> Drumlangrik, knight, <strong>the</strong> 9*^<br />

hour before noon, and at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> solemnization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marriage.<br />

44. Letters <strong>of</strong> Reversion, whereby James Douglas, son, and also<br />

heir <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late William Douglas <strong>of</strong> Hawik, knight, with consent <strong>of</strong><br />

David Douglas <strong>of</strong> Baitfurde, Master Robert Douglas, provost <strong>of</strong><br />

Linclwden, and Master John Douglas, his curators, on <strong>the</strong> narration<br />

that his *' gudschir " (grandfa<strong>the</strong>r), James Douglas <strong>of</strong> Drumlangrig,<br />

knight, conform to contract dated 23 March 1572, had infefted him in<br />

<strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Knok, Auchinskeoch, Mekillholme, Cumrew, &c., in all a<br />

£48 land <strong>of</strong> old extent in <strong>the</strong> barony <strong>of</strong> Kirkmichall, Carru<strong>the</strong>ris,<br />

Downandbie and Kirktilcloische, in <strong>the</strong> stewartry <strong>of</strong> Ananderdale ; <strong>the</strong><br />

said James' half part <strong>of</strong> Mouswall, &c., Logane tenement, &c., Dronok,<br />

&c. and many o<strong>the</strong>r lands. Never<strong>the</strong>less James Douglas engages, on<br />

payment to him, within <strong>the</strong> parish church <strong>of</strong> Drumfreis, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong><br />

£100 Scots by his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, to quitclaim and overgive to him all <strong>the</strong><br />

lands above enumerated ; and binds himself that nei<strong>the</strong>r he nor his<br />

heirs should absent <strong>the</strong>m from receiving <strong>the</strong> said sum on premonition <strong>of</strong><br />

40 days. Signed and sealed at Drumlangrig, 24 March, 1572-3.<br />

45. Letters <strong>of</strong> Assignation by Sir James Dowglas <strong>of</strong> Drumlanrig,<br />

Knight, on <strong>the</strong> preamble that he was bound by an obligation to have<br />

infefted <strong>the</strong> late Sir William Dowglas <strong>of</strong> Hawik, knight, his son and<br />

apparent heir, in <strong>the</strong> fee <strong>of</strong> all his lands and baronies <strong>of</strong> Drumlanrig,
