176. This morning <strong>the</strong> Duchess uas about seven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clock<br />

(uas) (sic) safely delivered <strong>of</strong> a daughter. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> uas at Windsor,<br />

but uas immediately sent for. Hir mo<strong>the</strong>r came on Saturdays<br />

night. I hav ordered tlie <strong>of</strong>licers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Castle to attend <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

Chanslour and your Lordship to knou what <strong>the</strong>y shal doe on this<br />

occatione ; and if <strong>the</strong>y obey us, I uold, had I <strong>the</strong> honor to be with<br />

your Jjordship nou, you uill hav no occatione to be displeased with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. Nou at last, Lauderdal's Estate is setled on his bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

for good and all as I am informed. So all his relations hear are as<br />

merry, as o<strong>the</strong>r people think, if <strong>the</strong>y got justice, <strong>the</strong>y uold have<br />

reason to be sad. I expect my bro<strong>the</strong>r with impatience, seing by<br />

177. Yesterday my bro<strong>the</strong>r came to toun, but <strong>the</strong> Lord Eegister<br />

is not come, but uill be hear this night, having taken <strong>the</strong> York<br />

coach at Grantham. I shal nou explane all <strong>the</strong> matters in my<br />

instructions I hope to your Lordship's satisfactione, for I hav sein<br />

<strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>saurie and shal make you much a saver. For<br />

upon uhat is <strong>the</strong>r set doun for repairing <strong>the</strong> Castles and Magazines,<br />

I uill doe both that and all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r expenses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Artillery<br />

besides, so that I am confident your Lordship uill be satisfied, seing<br />

I containe all uithin <strong>the</strong> expenses that your Lordship has sent up<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong>. <strong>The</strong>r is no kind <strong>of</strong> neus hear at present. <strong>The</strong><br />

Duchess continous still uell, and hir daughter w^as yesterday<br />

christianed by <strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>of</strong> London, and named Chariot Mary.<br />

<strong>The</strong> King came to see hir yesterday, and returned to Windsor at<br />

night. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> uent this day and uill be in toun on Saturday.<br />

Now that <strong>the</strong> King is getting some mony he looked not for, I beliv<br />

what he promised to your lordship, and could not formerly<br />

performe, may now be easielyer done. If your Lordship pleas that<br />

I should tak my oun uay in it, I doubt not <strong>of</strong> success. But<br />

except I see a necessity, I uill not move in it till I hear<br />

from your Lordship.<br />

Postscript :—<strong>Duke</strong> La [u] derdale has at last given his estate to<br />

Eichard his nephew, but <strong>the</strong> Duchess has persuaded him to accept<br />

<strong>of</strong> [Suinton for Lidinton (?) ]<br />

178. Drummond had received Queensberry's letter stating<br />

what he had done in <strong>the</strong> Artillery afiair. "<strong>The</strong> neus is hear that,<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> Lauderdale having gon to Tunbridg Uells, <strong>the</strong> w^aters has<br />

not agreed uith him, so that phisitianes are sent for to him, and<br />

that he is in danger. But by <strong>the</strong> nixt post I shall be able to giv<br />

ane accompt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> full storie. <strong>The</strong> Queen is come to toun this<br />

night. To-morrow^ <strong>the</strong> King and <strong>Duke</strong> go from Winser to Greinuich<br />

to see <strong>the</strong> new Yaught launched, and are to dine hear and to<br />

return to Windser at night. But <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> stays hear till<br />
