[John Lord Carlele has an instrument <strong>of</strong> sasine in <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Kynmounde<br />

with mills, Lochirwoude with mill, Duruok with mill and<br />

advowson <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church, Middilbe with mill and advowson, Kyrkconnell<br />

with mill and advowson, Lus with mill and advowson, Anand with<br />

fishing, Kirkpatrik with mill, Brumell, Mariorybank, Oulcotia, Egilfechane,<br />

Riall, Cummertrees, TordufF, Bengali, Dailbank, Brydkirk, Lochtmabane,<br />

which Lord Carlele had resigned personally at Edinburgh, and<br />

which <strong>the</strong> King had united with <strong>the</strong> barony <strong>of</strong> Carlele in charter. <strong>The</strong><br />

King's precept which is engrossed is dated at Edinburgh, 20 January,<br />

twenty-eighth year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King's reign. Sasine is given to Adam <strong>of</strong><br />

Carlell, elder, attorney <strong>of</strong> John, Lord Carlele, by Robert Carlele, son <strong>of</strong><br />

John, Lord Carlele, sheriff and bailie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King in that part, who<br />

approached to <strong>the</strong> principal messuage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lordship <strong>of</strong> Carlell and gave<br />

sasine <strong>the</strong>re at <strong>the</strong> iron gate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> Carlele, 30 January 1486-<br />

88. *' Item aae chartor grantit be his Majestic under <strong>the</strong> great seal to<br />

Jo» Lord Torthorwald, erecting <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Torthorwald, in all tyme<br />

comeing to be callit <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Cairleill, in ane free burgh <strong>of</strong> barronie ;<br />

give and i^ower to <strong>the</strong> inhabitants <strong>the</strong>rein to buy and sell in <strong>the</strong> said<br />

burgh <strong>of</strong> Carleill all merchandice pertaining to ane burgh <strong>of</strong> barronie,<br />

with power to have baxters, brousters, fleshers, and workmen <strong>of</strong> all airts<br />

and trades, pertaining to <strong>the</strong> libertie <strong>of</strong> ane burgh <strong>of</strong> barronie, and to<br />

have ane cross and mercat day ilk week, and oppen fairs ilk year, daitit<br />

to John, Lord Cairlile, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Glengip, Garvellgill and Giramonbie,<br />

for infefting John, Lord Cairlile, in all and haill <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Torduff<br />

John Lord Cairleill <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands and lordship <strong>of</strong> Cairleill upon his own<br />

resignatione, daitit 1487."<br />

92. Notarial Instrument <strong>of</strong> Resignation narrating that in presence<br />

<strong>of</strong> a magnificent prince and mighty lord, Alexander, <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>of</strong> Albany,<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> March and lord <strong>of</strong> Anandale and Man, and witnesses, compeared<br />

personally Robert Grahame <strong>of</strong> Achincash and resigned all his lands <strong>of</strong><br />

Rowcane, in <strong>the</strong> barony <strong>of</strong> Carlile, and sheriffdom <strong>of</strong> Drumfres, into<br />

<strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> a noble man, John, Lord Carlile, his overlord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same^<br />

by staff and baton, and quitclaimed <strong>the</strong> same, for himself, his heirs anj<br />

assignees, to be held to <strong>the</strong> said John and his heirs for ever. In more<br />

evident witnessing where<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said Robert procured <strong>the</strong> seal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

said <strong>Duke</strong> to be appended. Done at Edinburgh, in <strong>the</strong> chamber <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
