15. Notarial Instrument narrating, that in presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> notary<br />

and witnesses, a noble man James Douglas <strong>of</strong> Dumlanrig past to <strong>the</strong><br />

personal presence <strong>of</strong> an honourable woman, Margaret Douglas his<br />

spouse, and <strong>the</strong>re required her earnestly (instanter requisiuit) to go with<br />

him to his place and dwelling <strong>of</strong> Dumlanrig, and adhere to him as spouse<br />

ought to spouse ; and <strong>of</strong>fered him as ready to receive her and treat her<br />

as spouse should spouse ; who altoge<strong>the</strong>r refused to go with him or<br />

adhere to him for certain reasons as she asserted moving her mind for<br />

<strong>the</strong> time. Upon which Douglas craved instruments. Done in <strong>the</strong><br />

dwelling house <strong>of</strong> Hugh Douglas, burgess <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, at 3 afternoon<br />

20 December 1530, witnesses Alexander Drummond <strong>of</strong> Carnok, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

16. Gift by King James <strong>the</strong> Fifth to James Douglas <strong>of</strong> Drumlangrig,.<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " nonentres, males, fermes, pr<strong>of</strong>ittis and dewiteis " <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands<br />

and barony <strong>of</strong> Drumlangrig both property and tenantry, in <strong>the</strong> sheriffdom<br />

<strong>of</strong> Drumfreis, <strong>of</strong> all terms and years <strong>the</strong> lands had been in <strong>the</strong> King's<br />

hands since <strong>the</strong> decease <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late William Dowglas <strong>of</strong> Drumlangrig " in<br />

<strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> Flodoune," and all years to come, till <strong>the</strong> entry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

righteous heir, with <strong>the</strong> relief when it should happen ; to be held by him<br />

and his heirs and assignees. Given under <strong>the</strong> Privy Seal, at Paris,.<br />

Douglas <strong>of</strong> Drumlanerk, <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nonentres <strong>of</strong> all and haill his<br />

landis and barony <strong>of</strong> Drumlanerk wyth <strong>the</strong> pertinentis, as at mair lentb<br />

is contenit in our signatour <strong>of</strong> gift maid to him thairupoun, and hes<br />

componit and gottin gratitud fra him tharfor : Quharfor we charge you,<br />

incontinent, this our precept sene, ye subscriue <strong>the</strong> said signatour to <strong>the</strong><br />
