<strong>The</strong> original charter is in <strong>the</strong> following terms :—Robertus de Bruis,<br />

omnibus hominibiis suis et amicis, salutem. Sciatis me dedisse et concessisse<br />

et hac carta mea confirraasse luoni et hcredibus suis, locum qui<br />

est inter piscariam de Blawad et aquam de Hesch ; tenendum de me et<br />

heredibus meis, ad piscarias suas faciendas et retia tendenda, libere et<br />

quiete ; reddendo miclii annuatim unam libram piperis, uel sex denarios<br />

hiis testibus, Petro de Humez, Hugone de Corri, Hugone filio Ingebaldi,<br />

Roberto de Hodelmia, Waltero de Bosco, Humfrido del Gardine,<br />

67. Charter by William <strong>of</strong> Brus, addressed to his men and friends,<br />

Eranks and Angles, granting and confirming to Adam de Karleolo<br />

(Carlyle) son <strong>of</strong> Robert, and his heirs, <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Kynemund by <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

right divisions, and <strong>of</strong> increase <strong>the</strong> whole land with wood and pasture as<br />

far as Steinreisbech, and so according to <strong>the</strong> lead by <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

marsh between west and north <strong>of</strong> Wrennehoc towards <strong>the</strong> Blanch land<br />

to <strong>the</strong> nearest bridge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Blanch land but one, and so from that<br />

bridge as far as <strong>the</strong> spring whence <strong>the</strong> lead comes which is called<br />

Houticr<strong>of</strong>tebech, and so according to that lead descending to <strong>the</strong> sike in<br />

Wintej'bech Scok which passes by Walterbrig ; and so by that sike as<br />

far as Blabech ; and so by Blabech descending to where it falls into<br />

Gillemartinebech ; and beyond Gillemartinebech commonty <strong>of</strong> pasture<br />

with those <strong>of</strong> Millebi ; and with Brakanepheit ; and one mill with a<br />

pond and a reasonable site, and with reasonable roads to <strong>the</strong> mill and to<br />

<strong>the</strong> water to be led to <strong>the</strong> mill upon Polraban in <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> Cumbertres.<br />

And within <strong>the</strong>se bounds <strong>the</strong> grantee and his heirs shall be<br />

able to build and cultivate and make erections wherever <strong>the</strong>y will,<br />

except in Brakanepheit where <strong>the</strong>y shall not make houses unless by me.<br />

. <strong>The</strong> grantee and his men shall also have free roads to market through<br />

<strong>the</strong> forest at Lochmaben through Dalton, and to Dumfreis through<br />

Rochel, and <strong>the</strong>y shall hold all <strong>the</strong>se lands and tenements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> granter<br />

and his heirs in fee and heritage, for performing <strong>the</strong> fourth part <strong>of</strong> a<br />

knight's service, reserving to <strong>the</strong> granter and his heirs <strong>the</strong> chase <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> stag and hind, hog and roe deer. Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> granter has given<br />

<strong>the</strong> lands, with <strong>the</strong> mill, to <strong>the</strong> grantee and his heirs, to be held <strong>of</strong> him<br />

and his heirs for homage and service, and for excambion <strong>of</strong> Locardebi,<br />

which Robert de Brus, his fa<strong>the</strong>r, gave to Robert, <strong>the</strong> grantee's fa<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

for his homage and service. With clause <strong>of</strong> warrandice in time <strong>of</strong><br />

peace, and promise that if <strong>the</strong> granter is unable to warrant <strong>the</strong> lands, he<br />

Vill give an exchange equal in value from his lands in Herterness.<br />

68. Charter by William Bruce, granting to Ivo <strong>of</strong> Kirkpatrick that<br />

land in <strong>the</strong> fee <strong>of</strong> Penresax which is called Thorbrec and Willambi and<br />

<strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Blacwde, for his homage and service, to be hel(^ to <strong>the</strong><br />

grantee and his heirs in fee and heritage, reserving <strong>the</strong> patronage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

church. Granting also <strong>the</strong> two carucates <strong>of</strong> land in <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong><br />

Penresax, with t<strong>of</strong>ts and cr<strong>of</strong>ts, which Richard son <strong>of</strong> Aldus, Robert son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cecilia, Adam <strong>of</strong> Willambi, Adam son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> priest, Adam son <strong>of</strong><br />
