May 10. What is writen befor is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date you see it, since when I<br />

though[t] it better to keep this bearer till <strong>the</strong> Holland letters came,<br />

which was not till this day at none ; which haue brought considerable<br />

intelligence, <strong>of</strong> which you will haue had an account by Gosfort, who<br />

will be some houers, I believe, soner with you, <strong>the</strong>n this bearer, being<br />

<strong>the</strong> better horseman. What els I haue to say 1 refFer to him.<br />

St. James's, May : 20: 1685.<br />

I haue only tyme to tell you that I send you by this bearer, Gosfort,<br />

on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> intelligence, I receued this day from Holland by<br />

which you see how busy and undertaking <strong>the</strong> rebellious crue that was<br />

<strong>the</strong>re, are. Besides Captain GifFord in a fift rate, who is already<br />

sayled, I haue ordi'ed Captain Talbot in <strong>the</strong> Falcon, to go into <strong>the</strong><br />

Frith to receue your orders. No care shall be wanting here to advertice<br />

you <strong>of</strong> what I know, and I am sure none will be wanting where you<br />

are, to do what is best for my service. Let <strong>the</strong> D : <strong>of</strong> Monmouth be<br />

prosecuted as well as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r rebells. Lord Dumbarton will be sone<br />

after this bearer with you.<br />

40.— (7) <strong>The</strong> King to <strong>the</strong> Commissioner—<strong>the</strong> expedition from<br />

Holland to aim at Stirling.<br />

St. James's, May 17 : 1685.<br />

1 keept this bearer. Captain Barkley, till this day to see what newse<br />

<strong>the</strong> Holland letters would bring, which only confirme that most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fugitives <strong>of</strong> both nations, except <strong>the</strong> D : <strong>of</strong> Monmouth are gone with <strong>the</strong><br />

ships, and that <strong>the</strong>ir cheef aime is at Stirling, but considering <strong>the</strong> good<br />

postur you have put things in, that is easier sayd <strong>the</strong>n done. Things<br />

are, God be thanked, very quiat here, and I am confident <strong>the</strong> parliament<br />

will do <strong>the</strong>ir duty, as becoms <strong>the</strong>m. This bearer will tell you all <strong>the</strong><br />

newse <strong>of</strong> this place.<br />

41.— (8) <strong>The</strong> King to <strong>the</strong> Commissioner—sending arms to <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

Argyll having touched at Orkney.<br />

St. James's, May 19 : 1685.<br />

I had yesterday <strong>the</strong> newse you sent to <strong>the</strong> Lord Argils hauing touched<br />

at Orkeney, and am glad to find by <strong>the</strong> same letter from <strong>the</strong> secret<br />

committee that you haue put all things in so good a postur to receue <strong>the</strong><br />

rebells. I haae ordred <strong>the</strong> arms and amunition you sent for, to be goti<br />

ready to be sent by sea, which wind and wea<strong>the</strong>r permitting, will be sone<br />

with you. I have also ordred Captain Hamilton in <strong>the</strong> Kingfisher, a<br />

4 : rate, to saile for <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, to joyne <strong>the</strong> frigats, already<br />

sent <strong>the</strong><strong>the</strong>r. I shall take <strong>the</strong> best care I can to secure <strong>the</strong> English<br />

borders. This bearer Lord Charles Murray will giue you an account<br />

<strong>of</strong> all things here, and besids I haue not tyme to say more, being just<br />

going to <strong>the</strong> parliament.<br />

I was glad to lieare <strong>the</strong> sesse past so unanimously. I hope <strong>the</strong><br />

parliament here will follow such good presedents as you have given<br />

<strong>the</strong>m.<br />
