120. <strong>The</strong> flyeing paket you dispatcht on <strong>the</strong> 25th came hi<strong>the</strong>r<br />

this morninge about 2 a'cloke, and as sone as <strong>the</strong> King uas up,<br />

<strong>His</strong> Majesty appointed E. Middleton and Lord Melfort and me to<br />

uaet on him this afternon, uhich uee did, and commanded <strong>the</strong><br />

return to be made, as you will see in our joint letter urytin by<br />

Vicount Melfort. 289 is to caery it, so that I choiced to uryt this<br />

night, by <strong>the</strong> ordinary post, uhat I hawe to say, uhich, I doubt<br />

not, will be as sone, iff not be for him. You see <strong>the</strong> King leaves<br />

it to D. Ham choice, to come or no, as he thinks fitt ; and I<br />

<strong>Grace</strong> will siee uhat is order'd conserninge <strong>the</strong> Cessnoks in<br />

<strong>the</strong> joint letter, uhich I need not repeat. <strong>The</strong>r is ane claus put<br />

in it conserninge unety uhich is verry necessary, and we ought<br />

to tak it home to our selfs in <strong>the</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter. As to<br />

E. Sou<strong>the</strong>sk's bussines, "it is in your owne hands, as you will<br />

see by <strong>the</strong> letter I wrot to your <strong>Grace</strong> by <strong>the</strong> King's command<br />

on that subjecte .... I showed <strong>the</strong> Kinge <strong>the</strong> Acts you sent<br />

up, but <strong>the</strong>r is ane not <strong>of</strong> Acts mentioned in <strong>the</strong> Secret Commity's<br />

letter, uharin you haw desired his Majesty's directions, uhich<br />

wee haw not reseaved. I tould <strong>the</strong> King <strong>of</strong> Auchinbrek's joninge<br />

ui<strong>the</strong> Argyle, and that he is E. Belcarris bro<strong>the</strong>r in law. All<br />

suspected persons that can be falne upon will be seized hear.<br />

G. assurs r that 559 grows every day ra<strong>the</strong>r mor shagrine and<br />

pikishe ; and to tell r frely, it is verry uneasy bo<strong>the</strong> to himself<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>The</strong> King, you uill see in our letter, hes<br />

orderd mor forces to be put in Sterlinge, but leaves it to you<br />

whi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> standing troops or o<strong>the</strong>rs. My dearest Lord,<br />

adiws.<br />

Postscript:— 120 and I lauched uhen <strong>the</strong> claus conserninge<br />

<strong>the</strong> unety uas rede, and <strong>the</strong> King sayd he uould uryt also to<br />

your <strong>Grace</strong> himself. <strong>The</strong> short letter I send by E. Arrane is<br />

only for <strong>the</strong> fashion.<br />

121. That afternoon <strong>the</strong> King called for Earl Middleton,<br />

Lord Melfort, and <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Moray, and discoursed on several<br />

matters relating to <strong>the</strong> present affairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, such as
