<strong>The</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hamilton was expected next week. Yesterday<br />

Alderman Pritchards was declared Lord Mayor <strong>of</strong> London ; and<br />

matters would now go as well as heart could wish in that city. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>Duke</strong> <strong>of</strong> Monmouth was before <strong>the</strong> King's Bench <strong>the</strong> very first<br />

day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term, " but it uill tak some tym befor uee shall know<br />

<strong>the</strong> event <strong>of</strong> that process. <strong>The</strong>r is also a process aganst Lord<br />

Gray <strong>of</strong> bo<strong>the</strong> adultery and incest to be befor <strong>the</strong> judges this<br />

detening <strong>of</strong> her : but <strong>the</strong> saents haue right to all things and can<br />

doe nothinge amisse." <strong>The</strong> King and <strong>Duke</strong> had both promised him<br />

payment <strong>of</strong> his sum out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fines as <strong>the</strong> readiest " fons,"<br />

wherein he asks <strong>the</strong> Treasurer's favour.<br />

14. About commission concerning " sumtouns " affairs regarding<br />

which it was feared <strong>the</strong>re had been some irregularity, and a<br />

copy obtained from <strong>the</strong> Secretary's Office. Inquiry was to be made.<br />

15. Moray was commanded by his Majesty to let Queensberry<br />

know his Majesty's pleasure, that on Major White's entry to his<br />

charge <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> castle <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, and<br />

Lieutenant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company in garrison <strong>the</strong>re, he should pay to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Treasurer Depute " so much money as remaines in arrear unto<br />

him by <strong>the</strong> said company, not exceeding <strong>the</strong> daily allow^ance<br />

appointed for <strong>the</strong>ir subsistance." This money was to be reimbursed<br />

to Major White out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arrears <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pay as soon<br />

as it was in readiness to be paid to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

16. Some days ago <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> had ordered Moray to draw a<br />

precept for 200^*- to <strong>the</strong> present provost <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh for last year,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> pension to fall in time coming ; and one for 100^*- to <strong>the</strong><br />

clerks <strong>of</strong> council. " <strong>The</strong>r is also a letter to <strong>the</strong> Lords <strong>of</strong><br />

Sessione appointinge Wachobe <strong>of</strong> Edmistoune to be on <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>r<br />

number." He had spoken to <strong>the</strong> King and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

letter Queensberry desired regarding <strong>the</strong> Fishing Company, and<br />

both <strong>the</strong> letter which was drawn as <strong>the</strong> Treasurer had advised,<br />

and private instructions for dissolving <strong>the</strong> Company were to be<br />

sent l3y that or <strong>the</strong> next post. He had difficulty in <strong>the</strong> business<br />

<strong>of</strong> Queensberry 's cousin Murray and <strong>of</strong> Stannous' s commission.<br />

17. He had that morning again spoken with <strong>His</strong> Eoyal Highness<br />

about Queensberry 's cousin's business and urged it with all<br />

possible zeal "beyond uhat I could haue sayd had <strong>the</strong> conserne<br />

bene my oune, and yet uithout success. He sayd he uould<br />
