John Labatt Centre (1)<br />
<strong>The</strong> John Labatt Centre is a catalytic piece <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure to spur revitalization <strong>in</strong> the<br />
downtown. Construction <strong>of</strong> the facility began <strong>in</strong><br />
2001 and the new arena opened <strong>in</strong> 2002. <strong>The</strong><br />
John Labatt Centre seats 9,000 people for hockey<br />
games and hosts approximately 150 sport<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
non-sport<strong>in</strong>g events a year. Through such events,<br />
the centre attracts approximately 500,000 visitors<br />
to the downtown every year.<br />
Covent Garden Market (2)<br />
<strong>The</strong> market was first established <strong>in</strong> 1845, and was<br />
rebuilt <strong>in</strong> 1999 with help from the City. <strong>The</strong> market<br />
has been a major draw for the downtown and<br />
sales have tripled s<strong>in</strong>ce its reopen<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Approximately 40,000 people visit the market<br />
each month and it <strong>of</strong>fers them a wide variety <strong>of</strong><br />
fresh food, restaurants and shops.<br />
Central Library (3)<br />
Central Library was developed <strong>in</strong> 2002 <strong>in</strong> the<br />
struggl<strong>in</strong>g Galleria Mall (now known as Citi Plaza).<br />
<strong>The</strong> Central Library brought a creative and<br />
excit<strong>in</strong>g new use to a space left vacant by the Bay<br />
store. <strong>The</strong> library has been a huge success and<br />
now attracts 95,000 people monthly.<br />
Fanshawe College Campus (4)<br />
Fanshawe College has recently purchased a<br />
heritage build<strong>in</strong>g to develop a downtown arts<br />
campus. This development is the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />
Fanshawe’s 10 year multi-campus build<strong>in</strong>g project<br />
that will expand the student base downtown. It is<br />
planned that with<strong>in</strong> 10 years, the school will have<br />
several downtown build<strong>in</strong>gs with space for 1,000<br />
students and 75 staff.<br />
Citi Plaza (5)<br />
After an extensive redevelopment <strong>of</strong> the Galleria<br />
Mall <strong>in</strong> 2009, the mall was transformed <strong>in</strong>to a<br />
mixed-use complex and renamed Citi-Plaza. It<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>s a mix <strong>of</strong> retail, <strong>of</strong>fice, bus<strong>in</strong>ess and<br />
consumer services and three post secondary<br />
educational facilities. <strong>The</strong> Plaza also conta<strong>in</strong>s the<br />
Ra<strong>in</strong>bow C<strong>in</strong>emas which has attracted millions <strong>of</strong><br />
visitors s<strong>in</strong>ce open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2002.<br />
City Hall (6)<br />
City Hall is located at 300 Duffer<strong>in</strong> Avenue, and it is here that civic adm<strong>in</strong>istrative staff and<br />
City Council consult with the pubic <strong>in</strong> order to set annual budgets, establish strategic<br />
priorities, and determ<strong>in</strong>e overall policies<br />
Convention Centre (7)<br />
<strong>The</strong> Convention Centre, open <strong>in</strong> 1993, held 28 conventions and 14 multi-day meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong><br />
2010 and s<strong>in</strong>ce 2008, has held 1164 events compris<strong>in</strong>g 380,000 people.<br />
Victoria Park (8)<br />
This historic park (created <strong>in</strong> 1874) <strong>of</strong>fers many opportunities for recreation and is home to<br />
festivals and special events and features an outdoor skat<strong>in</strong>g r<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> the w<strong>in</strong>ter. This<br />
downtown park receives approximately one million visitors annually.<br />
Labatt Park (9)<br />
<strong>The</strong> historic Labatt Park (created <strong>in</strong> 1877) is a baseball stadium located near the forks <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Thames River <strong>in</strong> central London. It is the oldest cont<strong>in</strong>uously used baseball diamond <strong>in</strong> North<br />
America and was voted best baseball park <strong>in</strong> Canada, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Baseball Canada<br />
organization.<br />
Forks <strong>of</strong> the Thames (10)<br />
Located at the very west end <strong>of</strong> the Downtown, the Forks <strong>of</strong> the Thames consist <strong>of</strong> several<br />
<strong>in</strong>terconnected parks <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Peace Garden, Ivey Park and Harris Park. An extensive<br />
pathway system (50km long) extends from Ivey Park along the Thames <strong>in</strong> three directions,<br />
connect<strong>in</strong>g downtown London with city neighbourhoods some 12km away from the<br />
downtown.<br />
Dundas Street (11)<br />
Dundas Street is on the rise, with heritage build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g restored and vacancies decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Residents<br />
and workers are enjoy<strong>in</strong>g the experience <strong>of</strong> this<br />
“ma<strong>in</strong> street” with a grow<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />
retailers and nearby facilities such as the John Labatt<br />
Centre, Central Library and Covent Garden Market.<br />
Transit Hub (12)<br />
<strong>The</strong> hub <strong>of</strong> London’s transit system is located<br />
downtown at Dundas and Richmond Streets and<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>s both VIA Rail and London Transit stations.<br />
<strong>The</strong> City has focused resources to develop its transit<br />
bus system and its London Transit buses service the<br />
City as a whole and all major streets <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Downtown.<br />
London Tra<strong>in</strong> Station (13)<br />
<strong>The</strong> London Tra<strong>in</strong> Station is the primary regional<br />
transportation hub with<strong>in</strong> the City and considered<br />
Canada’s fourth-busiest passenger term<strong>in</strong>al.<br />
Residential Growth<br />
Over the past 10 years, downtown London has<br />
experienced significant population growth and the<br />
construction <strong>of</strong> many new residential units. S<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
1998, 1,731 units have been constructed <strong>in</strong> the<br />
downtown. <strong>The</strong>se units enjoy close proximity to the<br />
Forks <strong>of</strong> the Thames and new public facilities<br />
Downtown.<br />
Public Art<br />
Downtown London has artistic and decorative metal<br />
trees which add <strong>in</strong>terest and colour to the downtown<br />
and promote London as the “forest city”.<br />
Heritage Preservation<br />
Downtown London has a strong heritage core,<br />
particularly along Dundas and Richmond Streets and<br />
around City Hall. A variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>centive programs<br />
have been created to encourage property owners to<br />
restore and renovate heritage build<strong>in</strong>gs; both their<br />
facades and <strong>in</strong>teriors. A cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g challenge for<br />
downtown London will be to repurpose its heritage<br />
stock to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> modern life.<br />
