Downtown Fredericton Timel<strong>in</strong>e 1749 - 2011<br />

1692 - 1876<br />

1692 - France ga<strong>in</strong>ed control over what today is Fredericton and Joseph<br />

Rob<strong>in</strong>eau Villebon established a fort where the Nashwaak River dra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the St John. This was an area prom<strong>in</strong>ent for fur trad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

1731 - Floods destroy the fort, but Fredericton was established<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> by French Acadians whom called the area Ste. Annes po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y settled where the Old Government House stands today<br />

1759 - <strong>The</strong> area comes under English jurisdiction after they defeat the<br />

French at Ste. Annes Po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

1783 – After the American<br />

Revolution, around 2000 loyalists<br />

settled <strong>in</strong> Ste. Annes Po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

1785 - <strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> New<br />

Brunswick was founded, which is now<br />

a major part <strong>of</strong> the downtown with a<br />

large campus and 9000 students. <strong>The</strong><br />

city adopts the name Fredericstown<br />

and becomes the prov<strong>in</strong>cial capital.<br />

1845 - Queen Victoria makes<br />

Fredericton a “Cathedral City” and the<br />

city landmark that still stands today<br />

known as the Gothic Cathedral was<br />

completed <strong>in</strong> 1854<br />

1876 – City Hall is constructed.<br />

1938 - 2011<br />

1938 – <strong>The</strong> New Brunswick College <strong>of</strong><br />

Craft and Design is created and stands<br />

as the only college <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e crafts and<br />

design <strong>in</strong> Canada<br />

1958 – <strong>The</strong> Beaverbrook Art Gallery<br />

was built. <strong>The</strong> gallery is<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationally known for its collection<br />

<strong>of</strong> British pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

1964 – <strong>The</strong> Historic Garrison District is<br />

named a National Historic Site<br />

1982 – Downtown Fredericton was<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporated<br />

1984 – City Hall designated a national<br />

historic site<br />

2001 -<strong>The</strong> award w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Fredericton-<br />

Moncton highway is built<br />

1973 – Amalgamation with<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g communities <strong>of</strong><br />

Silverwood, Nashwaaksis, Barker's<br />

Po<strong>in</strong>t and Marysville<br />

1981 – Westmorland Bridge opened,<br />

connect<strong>in</strong>g Fredericton’s North and<br />

South riverfronts<br />

1996 – All railway tracks removed as<br />

freight services are cut. Passenger<br />

service cut 11 years earlier;<br />

Downtown Fredericton completed<br />

streetscape improvements<br />

2010 – First Gay Pride parade takes<br />

place <strong>in</strong> city centre. City also <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

revitaliz<strong>in</strong>g its City Hall. and pedestrian<br />

bridge over the St. John River<br />

2007 – City launches its Municipal<br />

Plan to guide growth and<br />

development, as well as the Green<br />

Matters campaign target<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

reduction <strong>of</strong> emissions from the city<br />

2011 – City builds new Convention<br />

Centre, associated with a multi-level<br />

park<strong>in</strong>g facility and new <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g.
