1809 – Bytown settled<br />

1800 – Wrightsville (present day<br />
Hull) established, becom<strong>in</strong>g a spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
board for the settlement <strong>of</strong> Ottawa<br />
1849 – First City hall<br />
constructed <strong>in</strong> Bytown.<br />
1826 – Site chosen for the entrance<br />
to the Ottawa Canal <strong>in</strong> present day<br />
downtown.<br />
1857– Queen Victoria<br />
designates Ottawa the<br />
Capital <strong>of</strong> the Prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong><br />

1891 – Ottawa Electric<br />

creates a vast public<br />
transportation network.<br />
1855 – Bytown becomes the City <strong>of</strong><br />

1866 – Parliament Build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
completed. Appear as they exist<br />
today after reconstruction <strong>in</strong> 1927.<br />
1900 – Hull – Ottawa fire devastates<br />
the city and much <strong>of</strong> the waterfront<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
1912 - 1979<br />
1912 – Chateau Laurier and Union<br />
Station built. Ottawa serves as a major<br />
rail hub.<br />
1950 – Greber plan shifts Ottawa away<br />
from <strong>in</strong>dustry and manufactur<strong>in</strong>g. Focus<br />
on green space and modernism.<br />
1962 – Juliana Apartments completed.<br />
First <strong>of</strong> many downtown modernist<br />
apartment build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
1966 – Queensway completed as an east west l<strong>in</strong>kage. Many<br />
parkways completed dur<strong>in</strong>g this time. New tra<strong>in</strong> station built out <strong>of</strong> the<br />
downtown signals the end <strong>of</strong> railways presence. Spark Street Mall<br />
opens- one <strong>of</strong> North America’s first pedestrian only zones<br />
1927 – Ottawa Improvement Commission<br />
tasked with beautify<strong>in</strong>g downtown.<br />
1939 – Confederation Square completed<br />
with new war memorial and adjacent<br />
Central Post Office.<br />
1959 – National Capital Commission<br />
(NCC) created to oversee plann<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
development <strong>of</strong> Ottawa and Hull (now<br />
Gat<strong>in</strong>eau).<br />
1979 – First W<strong>in</strong>terlude Festival<br />
commences<br />
1983 - 2011<br />
1990’s – Influx <strong>of</strong> tech<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustries gives Ottawa the title<br />
<strong>of</strong> “Silicon Valley North”<br />
1983 – Transitway beg<strong>in</strong>s<br />
service. Rideau Centre<br />
Opens downtown.<br />

2000 – New Ottawa City Hall opens <strong>in</strong> downtown.<br />
2001 – Eleven municipalities amalgamated to form the City <strong>of</strong> Ottawa.<br />
O-Tra<strong>in</strong> completed.<br />
2013 – LRT construction to beg<strong>in</strong> with expected completion <strong>in</strong> 2017<br />
and fully commissioned and operational by mid-2018.<br />
2004 – CBC Broadcast<br />
Centre constructed. M<strong>in</strong>to<br />
Metropole development<br />
completed.<br />
2011 – Lebreton Flats<br />
development enter<strong>in</strong>g 3 rd<br />
phase. City <strong>in</strong> the midst <strong>of</strong><br />

construction boom.
