In Saskatoon, the downtown is a primary location for<br />

employment, shopp<strong>in</strong>g, enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, arts, culture and<br />

tourism. <strong>The</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Saskatoon and the private sector have<br />

re<strong>in</strong>forced this role by champion<strong>in</strong>g revitalization efforts such<br />

as <strong>in</strong>clusive and progressive plann<strong>in</strong>g processes; <strong>in</strong>vestments<br />

<strong>in</strong> the public realm and key pieces <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure; and<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives to <strong>in</strong>crease the residential population. <strong>The</strong>se efforts<br />

have put downtown Saskatoon <strong>in</strong> an excellent position to act<br />

as a focal po<strong>in</strong>t for the entire City and absorb future growth.<br />

Despite this, the downtown faces a range <strong>of</strong> challenges, such<br />

as realiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tensification aims <strong>in</strong> the face <strong>of</strong> strong outward<br />

growth pressures, develop<strong>in</strong>g ‘complete communities’ <strong>in</strong> the<br />

core’s two emerg<strong>in</strong>g neighbourhoods - River Land<strong>in</strong>g and the<br />

Warehouse District, and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g downtown’s vitality,<br />

particularly outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice hours.<br />
