Title: LABELLUM
Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of
the tip of the proboscis (snout) of a fruitfly (order
Diptera). Fruitflies possess mouthparts adapted
for sucking and usually feed on plant juices. The
tip of the proboscis in some flies has spongy
structures that convey liquid food to the mouth.
Solid foods are dissolved in a drop of saliva before
being sucked up (the same way). The original size
of the structure as depicted (without the powerful
magnification) is approximately 0.5-1mm.
Species name: Fruitfly (Drosophila melanogaster)
