76 Chapter 4: Upper Raw<strong>the</strong>ydale<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are a few footpaths in <strong>the</strong> dale but <strong>the</strong>y cannot<br />

be linked to make a good long walk. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

appear unwelcoming and under-used, giving <strong>the</strong> walker<br />

<strong>the</strong> feeling <strong>of</strong> trespassing. Although <strong>the</strong> slopes <strong>of</strong> Baugh<br />

Fell and Rise Hill are CRoW land <strong>the</strong>y are tantalisingly<br />

out <strong>of</strong> reach above <strong>the</strong> pastures: a walker must enter at<br />

<strong>the</strong> eastern or western end and it must be rare indeed<br />

for anyone to find <strong>the</strong> incentive to walk <strong>the</strong> slopes<br />

from one end to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. On a recent occasion when<br />

I walked in Garsdale <strong>the</strong> A684 was closed because <strong>the</strong><br />

Clough had washed some <strong>of</strong> it away, which was much<br />

appreciated. <strong>The</strong> footpaths, by-roads and quiet A684<br />

could be combined to provide a rare, blissful experience:<br />

an indication <strong>of</strong> what Garsdale once was and could be.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is not much to cause a tourist to linger,<br />

although rural architecture is always interesting. Some<br />
