(1992), we also tested a p<strong>la</strong>stic attachment system (Fig. 2.2) that was ma<strong>de</strong> of a 1 mmdiam<strong>et</strong>er<br />

m<strong>et</strong>al wire inserted within Tygon tubing (0.63 xO.95 cm [l/4x3/8 inch], VWR<br />

International, catalogue number 63014-472, Ville Mont-Royal, Que.). We fastened col<strong>la</strong>rs<br />

loosely enough to allow animais to gain mass (Berteaux <strong>et</strong> al. 2005), but tight enough to<br />

prevent loss and re<strong>du</strong>ce chances of an animal g<strong>et</strong>ting hung by its col<strong>la</strong>r in a tree. We<br />

attempted to capture, immobilize, and check neck condition of col<strong>la</strong>red porcupines every<br />

three months.<br />

We equipped juveniles captured soon after birth with Holohil VHF transmitters (mo<strong>de</strong>l<br />

R 1-2DM 7.5 g, Holohil Systems Ltd., Carp, Ont.) mounted on a m<strong>et</strong>al wire inserted within<br />

clear flexible Vinyl tubing (0.31 x0.47 cm [l/8x311 6 inch], United States P<strong>la</strong>stic Corp.,<br />

catalogue number 5900 l , Lima, OH). We captured and weighed col<strong>la</strong>red juveniles every<br />

week to check mass gain. Juveniles were chemically immobilized after each mass gain of 400<br />

g to verify if size of coll ars nee<strong>de</strong>d adjustment. When juveniles reached 3 kg, we changed
