4.9 Traffic controllers<br />
Traffic Controllers are required on both short and long term work where traffic needs <strong>to</strong> be<br />
periodically s<strong>to</strong>pped at the approach <strong>to</strong> a work site. In addition they maybe required <strong>to</strong>:<br />

<br />
Slow down or s<strong>to</strong>p traffic that may need <strong>to</strong> travel through or around the work site<br />
Control two-way traffic through a single lane section<br />
S<strong>to</strong>p traffic temporarily while the road is completely blocked.<br />
Traffic Controllers may not be required where:<br />
<br />
<br />
ADT is less than 100 vehicles per day, and<br />
Each entry <strong>to</strong> the work site is visible from the other end, and<br />
The work area is shorter than 100m.<br />
Ensure traffic controllers are certified and correctly dressed in high visibility clothing, and are<br />
informed of any special requirements relating <strong>to</strong> the worksite. Traffic controllers should be relieved<br />
after no more than 2 hrs and given a break from traffic control for no less than 15 minutes.<br />
4.10 Notification<br />
When conducting a task on the worksite that requires traffic control, (that will significantly disrupt the<br />
flow of traffic or speed limit changes are required), notification <strong>to</strong> and authorisation must be<br />
obtained from the RTA or the local council before work can commence. Consultation with the local<br />
council will be required as not all councils follow the same process.<br />
4.11 Signs & devices<br />
A general list of the signs that may be required for use as per TCPs which may include, but not<br />
limited <strong>to</strong>:<br />
4.12 Worker (symbolic) sign (T1- 5)<br />
Always use this sign where workers are actually onsite or visible <strong>to</strong> traffic, and always place it in<br />
advance of the work area. It must be removed or covered up when workers leave the site.<br />
