Lead vehicles<br />
The lead vehicle travels in front of the work vehicle for the following<br />
purposes:<br />
• <strong>to</strong> warn oncoming traffic of the work/heavy vehicle; and<br />
• the driver is able <strong>to</strong> alert the remaining convoy and workers of any<br />
potential hazards posed by on-coming traffic.<br />
The lead vehicle is not required on very low volume rural roads where speeds<br />
are less than 80km/hr and sight distance is less than 2D*m or on urban<br />
residential, collec<strong>to</strong>r or commercial streets where speeds are generally lower<br />
than 60km/hr.<br />
* D is the speed of traffic approaching the work site measured in km/hr or the speed limit applying <strong>to</strong> the<br />
road, whichever is greater. The symbol D is used with an appropriate fac<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> indicate the distance<br />
between two objects.<br />
Work Vehicle<br />
A work vehicle is the vehicle that is undertaking the work. In this project this<br />
refers <strong>to</strong> the low loader transporting the transformer.<br />
Shadow Vehicle<br />
The shadow vehicle follows slowly behind the work vehicle as it progresses.<br />
Its main purpose is <strong>to</strong> protect workers that may be outside of the work vehicle<br />
from passing traffic. This vehicle usually travels approximately 20m <strong>to</strong> 40m<br />
behind the work vehicle.<br />
Tail Vehicle<br />
The tail vehicle travels some distance behind the work vehicle for the purpose<br />
