Biostatistics Unit<br />

The Biostatistics Consulting Unit provides statistical consultation for graduate students in the<br />

medical center. The services <strong>of</strong>fered free <strong>of</strong> charge to graduate students include consulting on<br />

short-term, non-funded projects, and advising on issues such as study design, sample size<br />

requirements, and the appropriate statistical analyses for a study. The unit also provides data<br />

entry services for a nominal fee. Your faculty advisor will assist you in making the appropriate<br />

contact with this unit.<br />

Microcomputer Lab<br />

A microcomputer lab in room 604J <strong>of</strong> the Audiovisual Library in the College <strong>of</strong> Nursing<br />

Building is for student use. This facility contains IBM compatible and MacIntosh personal<br />

computers, printers, and a variety <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware. The microcomputer room is available to all<br />

students <strong>of</strong> the medical center's colleges during the following hours: Monday-Thursday 7:30<br />

a.m.-11:30 p.m.; Friday 7:30 a.m. - 9:45 p.m.; Saturday. 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m.; Sunday 1-11:30<br />

p.m. These hours are subject to change, especially during holidays and examination periods.<br />

Summer hours are shortened.<br />

Computing Center<br />

The Computing Center is located in McVey Hall, <strong>of</strong>f the west end <strong>of</strong> Funkhouser Drive. The<br />

Information Systems Help Desk in 110 McVey Hall hands out a wide variety <strong>of</strong> free<br />

introductory guides and computer manuals to facilitate your computer work and networking<br />

connections. The help desk also provides communications s<strong>of</strong>tware and other programs for<br />

which the <strong>University</strong> has site licenses to staff or students only. Be sure to bring a diskette if<br />

you want to get a copy <strong>of</strong> such s<strong>of</strong>tware. The help desk is open during regular business hours<br />

Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Call 257-2249 or send e-mail to helpdesk@uky.edu for more<br />

information.<br />

UK Online Internet is a service which will allow students dial-up access to online services<br />

from home or from dormitory rooms. Call UK Online at (800) 241-1009 for further<br />

information.<br />

The Computing Center houses the IBM 9672 mainframe computer, the HP SPP 2200, the<br />

Convex/HP Exemplar, and a number <strong>of</strong> smaller Unix machines and network server machines.<br />

These computers are used mostly for advanced research and e-mail applications. If you should<br />

need to work on one <strong>of</strong> these systems (and if you don't already have an account set up for you<br />

automatically through a course you are taking), you can go to User Account Services in 113<br />

McVey Hall and present a picture ID to request an account on one <strong>of</strong> the Computing Center<br />

systems. Most students, however, will find that computer resources available in the various<br />

microlabs around campus will meet their needs. Consultants for these various systems at the<br />

Computing Center are also available in the different microlabs.<br />

Each graduate student in the College <strong>of</strong> Nursing who needs to work with statistical s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

such as SAS and SPSS on one <strong>of</strong> the Convex/HP systems must get her/his own account by<br />

presenting a picture ID at User Account Services in 130 McVey Hall. SAS and SPSS are also
