Course Requirements<br />

Ph.D. students are expected to take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 45 credit hours <strong>of</strong> course work, plus 18<br />

credit hours <strong>of</strong> residency for the dissertation research (see sample programs). Most students<br />

take more than these minimal credits. Included within the 45 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework should be:<br />

11 credit hours <strong>of</strong> statistics and research design<br />

3 credit hours <strong>of</strong> philosophy<br />

9 credit hours <strong>of</strong> cognate courses<br />

16 credit hours <strong>of</strong> core nursing courses (NUR 790, 791, 792, 793, and 778)<br />

3 credit hours <strong>of</strong> doctoral seminar (NUR 779)<br />

3 credit hours <strong>of</strong> electives (independent study)<br />

A minimum <strong>of</strong> 11 credit hours <strong>of</strong> statistics and research design are required. STA 570 and<br />

STA 671 are required courses in the curriculum. Suggested courses include STA 672 and 673,<br />

SOC 681, and NUR 794. Other statistics and design courses relevant to your research interest<br />

can be elected. A philosophy <strong>of</strong> science course (3 credit hours) also is required. A minimum <strong>of</strong><br />

9 credit hours <strong>of</strong> cognate courses in a discipline or disciplines supportive <strong>of</strong> your dissertation<br />

research is required. Sixteen credit hours <strong>of</strong> core nursing courses and three credit hours <strong>of</strong><br />

dissertation seminar are required. The Doctoral Seminar (NUR 779) is a one-credit hour course<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered each fall and spring semester and must be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> three credits. In<br />

addition, independent studies can be used to augment and integrate your cognate and core<br />

course work in the preparation <strong>of</strong> your dissertation research. Ph.D. students in nursing are<br />

required to enroll for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 5 credit hours per semester (excluding intersession<br />

and summer terms).<br />
