Goal <strong>of</strong> the Ph.D. Program<br />

The goal <strong>of</strong> the Ph.D. Program is to prepare students to conduct clinical research for the<br />

generation <strong>of</strong> knowledge about nursing practice. The focus <strong>of</strong> the program is on developing<br />

and testing mid-range theories and the conduct <strong>of</strong> clinical nursing research. The intent <strong>of</strong> the<br />

program is to further develop skills in research and scholarship, and thus enhance the<br />

foundation in advanced nursing practice gained at the masters level. The products <strong>of</strong> the<br />

program will be scholars who conduct research, develop nursing science, and promote the<br />

application <strong>of</strong> knowledge within a circumscribed area <strong>of</strong> nursing practice.<br />

<strong>Graduate</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the Ph.D. Program will be able to:<br />

• Develop and test conceptual frameworks relevant to nursing practice<br />

• Conduct clinical research on nursing phenomena<br />

• Contribute to the development <strong>of</strong> nursing science through scholarly activities and the<br />

application <strong>of</strong> knowledge to nursing practice<br />

• Provide leadership for the analysis and resolution <strong>of</strong> issues related to nursing and health<br />

care<br />

• Assume increasingly complex roles in nursing research, practice, education, and/or<br />

health care organizations.<br />

• Collaborate with others to provide leadership in addressing society's health care needs.<br />
