Dissertation (Ph.D. program only)<br />
• Your major pr<strong>of</strong>essor will guide the planning, conduct, and reporting <strong>of</strong> your<br />
dissertation research with your advisory committee's advice.<br />
• Your advisory committee will ask you to defend your dissertation proposal.<br />
• As a Ph.D. candidate you must register for 2 credit hours dissertation residency credit<br />
each semester until you complete and defend your dissertation (NUR 767). <strong>Student</strong>s are<br />
required to complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> two semesters <strong>of</strong> NUR 767.<br />
• As a Ph.D. candidate who has passed the qualifying examinations and enrolled in NUR<br />
767 you can have your ID validated as a full-time student. See the Schedule <strong>of</strong> Classes<br />
for procedure.<br />
• You should obtain a copy <strong>of</strong> Instructions for the Preparation <strong>of</strong> Theses and Dissertations<br />
and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Musical Arts Projects. A hardcopy is available from the <strong>Graduate</strong> School<br />
<strong>of</strong>fice. Also, see the Guidelines for Scholarly Work in this <strong>Handbook</strong>.<br />
Manuscript Option Dissertation<br />
A minimum <strong>of</strong> three manuscripts, at least one <strong>of</strong> which must present original research findings,<br />
plus an introduction and a conclusion, are required. To meet graduate school requirements, the<br />
manuscript option dissertation must meet the same formatting guidelines as a traditional<br />
dissertation (e.g., abstract, table <strong>of</strong> contents, list <strong>of</strong> tables and figures, margin requirements,<br />
etc.)<br />
Other Dissertation Information<br />
• Members <strong>of</strong> your advisory committee, and others who provided assistance with your<br />
research should be recognized in Acknowledgments to the report(s) <strong>of</strong> your research.<br />
• Your dissertation should be filed with <strong>University</strong> Micr<strong>of</strong>ilms (information available<br />
from the <strong>Graduate</strong> School).<br />
• Allow a MINIMUM <strong>of</strong> six months from giving your major pr<strong>of</strong>essor a first draft for<br />
review to the date for your final examination.<br />
• The <strong>Graduate</strong> School requires that you provide two copies <strong>of</strong> your dissertation (1<strong>06</strong><br />
Gillis Bldg.). Both copies are forwarded to the <strong>University</strong> Library for processing. A fee<br />
for binding your dissertation is assessed.<br />
• You will find Turabian's Manual for Writers <strong>of</strong> Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations<br />
useful as a supplement to the APA Publication Manual. This latter book is the primary<br />
guide for reporting your dissertation research. For matters not addressed by APA (e.g.,<br />
table <strong>of</strong> contents), Turabian is useful.<br />
