Transition to the Doctoral Programs - University of Kentucky College of Nursing http://www.mc.uky.edu/nursing/StuResources/grads/handbook2005-06/trans_doctoral.htm Page 1 of 1 2/24/2011 Master's Transition to the Doctoral Programs A student enrolled in the master's program who has advanced standing can apply for admission to the Ph.D. Program. A similar arrangement is being developed for admission to the D.N.P. Program. Advanced standing is defined as completion of at least 17 credit hours of M.S.N. coursework including: (a) 6 hours of clinical seminar/practicum, (b) 2 hours of theory, (c) 3 hours of research, and (d) a GPA of 3.3. When students articulate course work between the master's and Ph.D. programs, the minimum requirements for each program must be satisfied for either or both degrees to be awarded. Application Procedure • Submit a letter to the assistant dean for research and the Ph.D. program expressing a desire to enroll in the Ph.D. Program. Include with the letter a revised goal statement reflecting your interest in Ph.D. education and research. • Attach an example of scholarly work (in absence of a degree). • Request that your academic advisor send the assistant dean for research and the Ph.D. program a recommendation about your admission to the Ph.D. program. • Complete an interview with the assistant dean for research and the Ph.D. program and one additional faculty member. • Additional letters of reference may be requested. Applications received after the stated deadlines will be considered on a space available basis only. Qualifying Examinations - University of Kentucky College of Nursing http://www.mc.uky.edu/nursing/StuResources/grads/handbook2005-06/qualify_exam.htm Page 1 of 3 2/24/2011 Qualifying Examinations, Pre-qualifying Time Limit, and Post-qualifying Residency Credit (UK Graduate School Policy) Qualifying Examinations The purpose of the qualifying examinations is to verify sufficient understanding of, and competence in, the field of study. You have two examinations: an individual and a comprehensive oral. You must satisfactorily complete the individual examination before proceeding to the comprehensive oral examination. Any one examination may be repeated once. Both examinations must be satisfactorily completed for you to become a candidate for the Ph.D. degree. Students are required to sit for the qualifying exam within five years of admission to the program. Extensions up to 12 months may be granted. Pre-qualifying Time Limit Per UK Graduate School policy, students first enrolled in a doctoral program in the fall 2005 semester will be required to take the qualifying examination within five years of entry into the program. Extension up to an additional three years may be requested. Extensions up to 12 months may be approved by the dean of the Graduate School upon receipt of a request from the director of graduate studies. Requests for extensions longer than 12 months must be considered by Graduate Council and will require the positive recommendation of the director of graduate studies, the chair of the student's advisory committee, and a majority vote of graduate faculty in the program. If the qualifying examination has not been passed at the end of five years, or at the end of all approved time extensions the student will be dismissed from the program. Post-qualifying Residency Credit Students first enrolled in a doctoral program in the fall 2005 semester will be required to enroll in a new 2 credit hour course after completing the qualifying examination, NUR 767 Dissertation Residency Credit. They will be charged at the in-state tuition rate plus mandatory fees. Students will remain continuously enrolled in this course every fall and spring semester until they have completed and defended the dissertation. This will constitute full-time enrollment, as registered in the student information system. Students needing continuing enrollment beyond the semester of the final examination will enroll in NUR 749 for 0 credit hours. Students will be required to complete two semesters of NUR 767 before they can graduate. If registered for NUR 767, residency credit will be applied for a qualifying examination taken at any time during the first semester of enrollment. However, the request to schedule the
