qualifying examination must be submitted and approved within the first six weeks <strong>of</strong> the<br />
semester.<br />
Objectives<br />
The purposes <strong>of</strong> the qualifying examinations are for you to:<br />
• Synthesize the theoretical, research, and clinical knowledge about your area <strong>of</strong> study<br />
• Demonstrate the ability to respond to diverse inquiries, and to explore your ideas and<br />
those <strong>of</strong> others orally and in writing<br />
Procedure<br />
• You must remove all incomplete (I and S) grades prior to taking any <strong>of</strong> the<br />
examinations.<br />
• You must fulfill all requirements for the degree except the dissertation and the final<br />
dissertation defense before beginning the qualifying examinations.<br />
• At the middle <strong>of</strong> the term prior to your individual and core examinations, your major<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essor notifies the assistant dean that you (a) are completing (or have completed) the<br />
necessary course requirements, and (b) are requesting to sit for the qualifying<br />
examinations in the next term.<br />
• Your advisory committee makes the final determination as to whether or not you are<br />
ready to sit for the qualifying examinations.<br />
• The individual examination is prepared by your advisory committee and is administered<br />
as the committee directs.<br />
• Ample time for preparation to sit for the qualifying examinations is essential. <strong>Student</strong>s<br />
approach study for the examinations in different ways. Consult with your advisory<br />
committee and major pr<strong>of</strong>essor for suggestions.<br />
• Within one month <strong>of</strong> completing the individual examination, your advisory committee<br />
will evaluate your performance on this examination and determine whether you pass or<br />
fail<br />
As appropriate, the committee will then either:<br />
◦ Inform you <strong>of</strong> your readiness to proceed with the comprehensive oral<br />
examination, and so notify the assistant dean. The assistant dean will notify the<br />
<strong>Graduate</strong> School <strong>of</strong> the date for your comprehensive oral examination.<br />
or<br />
◦ Advise you as to what you need to do to retake the individual examination and so<br />
inform the assistant dean.<br />
• The comprehensive oral examination is conducted and evaluated by your advisory<br />
committee. Upon completion <strong>of</strong> the comprehensive oral examination, the committee will<br />
inform you and the assistant dean if your performance was:<br />
◦ Satisfactory, thus you have completed the qualifying examinations and become a<br />
candidate for the Ph.D. degree.<br />
or<br />
◦ Unsatisfactory, and what you must do to repeat the oral examination.
