Goal of Doctor of Nursing Practice Program - University of Kentucky College of Nursing http://www.mc.uky.edu/nursing/StuResources/grads/handbook2005-06/dnp_goal.htm Page 1 of 1 2/24/2011 Goal of Doctor of Nursing Practice Program The goal of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program is to prepare nurses for senior clinical leadership and executive level positions in health systems. This program builds on advanced practice nursing at the master’s level and develops nursing leaders to improve health care outcomes at the individual client, population, and system levels. Students work closely throughout the curriculum with an assigned faculty advisor and clinical mentor. These assignments attempt to match faculty expertise with student career goals and needed areas of growth. Students complete a professional portfolio as part of the application process. The portfolio evaluation is the foundation upon which faculty/student assignments and clinical mentor assignments are made. Plans of Study - University of Kentucky College of Nursing http://www.mc.uky.edu/nursing/StuResources/grads/handbook2005-06/dnp_study.htm Page 1 of 2 2/24/2011 Plans of Study The curriculum of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program is composed of: • a required core in program evaluation • a required core in leadership • a required clinical residency that culminates in an evaluation project • a series of cognates that support specialization in a domain related to the student's clinical expertise and career goals • a choice of a track that focuses either on executive management or clinical leadership. Program Evaluation Core (12 credit hours) The program requires a thorough knowledge of process, impact, and outcome evaluation of clinical programs and services. Emphasis is placed on applying principles from epidemiology and statistics in developing and implementing evaluation plans for clinical programs. Leadership Core (14 credit hours) Students build skills in leading multiple constituencies within a clinical context. Creativity and innovation are encouraged through course experiences. The integration of values, vision, and theory is stressed. Clinical Residency (minimum of 6 credit hours) This residency is a practice-based research experience. Students enroll in the clinical residency after all coursework has been completed. Students select an area of inquiry that impacts clinical practice outcomes. An evaluation project is designed and implemented. Emphasis in this project is on the evaluation of an evidence based practice model or program design. Cognates (9 credit hours) These courses may be selected from a variety of disciplines but relate to the student’s clinical residency inquiry area and ultimate career goals. Students complete a portfolio of prior clinical work, education, scholarly endeavors, professional and community activities and stated career goals. The assigned faculty advisor and clinical mentor evaluate the portfolio and help the student select cognate courses. Area of Emphasis Students choose an area of emphasis in executive management or clinical practice leadership (21-22 hours). Students who choose the executive management track work with students who choose clinical practice leadership in the assessment and identification of strategies for enhancement of clinical programs to improve client outcomes. Executive management students build on current expertise in learning to develop, direct and manage multi-level health care delivery programs; e.g., individual agency, managed care organizations, or systems level organizations. Students who choose the clinical practice leadership track work with the executive level students as indicated above and learn to develop, implement and evaluate evidence based clinical practice models which will improve nursing and health outcomes.
