Library Resources
The University of Kentucky library system consists of several decentralized libraries. Those
you will most likely use include the William T. Young Library located on Clifton Drive;
Margaret I. King (MIK) Special Collections Library located on main campus; the Medical
Center Library (MCL), located in the Chandler Medical Center; the Audiovisual Library
(AVL), located on the sixth floor of the College of Nursing Building; and the Education
Library (EDL), located in Dickey Hall. Students in Hazard and Morehead may use the Area
Health Education Center (AHEC) libraries available at those sites. All these libraries conduct
tours at the beginning of each semester. Check with the reference department for times and
dates.
The library's computerized card catalog is INFOKAT. All holdings acquired since January
1985 have been entered into this system. The computer is connected to all UK libraries so that
you can inquire if any library on the campus owns the book or journal for which you are
looking. Ask the librarian if you need assistance. A class in the use of INFOKAT is also
available.
The new William T. Young Library located in the Clifton Park area just off Rose Street, is a
365,000 square foot, six story state-of-the-art facility. It houses the University's humanities,
social sciences, and life sciences collections. The library provides seating - much with network
connections - for approximately 4,000 library patrons, and the building contains over 37 miles
of shelving for library materials. Other features include 21 group study rooms, a large
computing lab and computing classrooms, and extensive audiovisual facilities. The phone
number is 257-0500 ext. 2072.
The W. T. Young Library is also a repository for government documents. You will find
numerous health statistics and other health information there. It holds more than two million
volumes and has state-of-the-art computer technology throughout. You will need a UK student
I.D. or driver's license to access the library.
Medical Center Library (MCL). You may do computer searching in the reference room located
there, and will find numerous abstracts and indexes to use. You also will have access to study
carrels and rooms for your convenience. The hours are: Friday, close at 8 p.m.; Saturday, open
8 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Sunday, opens at noon with 24-hour access through Friday, 8 p.m.; special
hours of operation will be posted for holidays.
Printing from all Medical Center public computers is $.10 per page, just as it does at the UK
libraries.
There are two types of cards accepted by the Medical Center printers as well as at the printers
on campus.
• DART cards are available at the DART machine in the Audiovisual Library, sixth floor,
College of Nursing Building; at Young Library, and at the Food Services/Food Storage
Office at K-Lair. DART cards can be charged to University accounts via IDIV or can
