Final Examination<br />

• Your final examination will be conducted by an expanded advisory committee chaired<br />

by the assistant dean or a designee. The dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> School and president <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>University</strong> are ex-<strong>of</strong>ficio members <strong>of</strong> the committee.<br />

• Your examination is held in a public forum. Any member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> community<br />

may attend.<br />

• Once the advisory committee obtains copies <strong>of</strong> the final draft <strong>of</strong> your dissertation, your<br />

committee will advise your major pr<strong>of</strong>essor to schedule your examination with the<br />

assistant dean.<br />

• The <strong>Graduate</strong> School appoints the outside examiner upon receipt <strong>of</strong> the notification <strong>of</strong><br />

the Intent to Schedule a Final Doctoral Examination Form from the assistant dean at<br />

least eight weeks before the event.<br />

• The <strong>Graduate</strong> School establishes the time and date <strong>of</strong> your final exam two weeks before<br />

the examination.<br />

• At least two weeks before the examination you will deliver to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School:<br />

◦ a copy <strong>of</strong> your dissertation<br />

◦ the Request for Final Doctoral Examination<br />

◦ the Dissertation Approval Sheet, both signed by your advisory committee.<br />

◦ Once your dissertation is reviewed and approved by the <strong>Graduate</strong> School, you<br />

deliver a copy <strong>of</strong> your dissertation to the outside examiner and to the assistant<br />

dean.<br />

◦ You must apply to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School for the Ph.D. degree according to the<br />

dates given in the <strong>University</strong> calendar.<br />

Outside Examiner:<br />

The role <strong>of</strong> the outside examiner on the Ph.D. final examination committee<br />

includes:<br />

• assurance that only qualified candidates receive degrees and insurance<br />

against inadequate program standards<br />

• assurance that the examination is administered in a fair and impartial<br />

manner<br />

• the return <strong>of</strong> a reporting form to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School<br />
