E-2 Videoconferencing employs both communication technology and network technology to implement the real-time, bidirectional and interactive remote communication between separate sites. It allows persons at two sites or more sites to exchange video images, voice, documents and charts in real time, just like in the same conference room. Videoconferencing provides a new tool to improve work efficiency and decrease cost for remote communication. The basic architecture of a videoconferencing system is shown in the figure below. Figure E-1 Basic Architecture of a Videoconferencing System As shown in the figure above, the videoconferencing system consists of three parts: video conference terminal, communication mediaand Multi-point Control Unit (MCU). Video conference terminaland MCU are special videoconference devices, while the communication media can be an existing transmission network. Video conference terminal Video conference terminal converts information in the conference room into transferable codes through video/audio processing and multiplexing/demultiplexing, and then sends them to an MCU or another video conference terminal through communication media.
